ratings in plain english - 2005/11/17 23:06 Is there a straightforward way to turn a rating difference between two players into an expected percentage? For instance, I have heard people say things like if a 2600 plays a 2700 you would expect the 2600 to only win X of 100 games... how is this calculated?

re:ratings in plain english - 2005/11/17 23:25 In effect normally intimately distributed variable with a standard deviation of 200 points. That`s all you endlessly need to know in order to lightly calculate the expectancies whether you know statistical theory. If you do not their are tables available on the web, so you may start with a Google search on the subject.

re:ratings in plain english - 2005/11/17 23:49 This is just theoretical. Premise is which they`re is no anonymously draw. Premise is which the difference in the rating of the players arent more than 400 ELO points. ...heres where I found it. All in all its plain German http://www.fvschach.de/dokument/elo_rp.htm

re:ratings in plain english - 2005/11/18 00:27 an assumption of the Elo system. The 200 point sigma on the other hand, is by definition. A rough table of expectancies based on these assumptions can be found at http://gobase.org/rating/elo.html .
The normality of performance distribution is open to challenge and has in fact been challenged. For instance, see Jeff Sonas` "Chess Metrics" page at http://www.chessmetrics.com/ for a discussion.
