Is Shereshevsky right or Dvoretsky? - 2005/11/15 10:00 In Endgame Strategy, Shereshevsky countries which Capalbanca belongs in the intuitive school while Smyslov, Karpov, and Petrosian are "calculators".
However Dvoretsky, in Positional Play, says that the "Logicians" comprise such players as Rubinstein, Portisach, Botvinik, and the "Intuitives" are players like Capablanca, Smyslov, and Karpov.
Seems that at least one author is overstating his case at least somewehat, but which one? What do you think?
As an aside, I`ve read that the intuitive players tend to hold their strength longer as they age while the calculators suffer from miscvalcs and lose games the intuytives can still win.
So what kind of player is Korchnio? And Lasker?

re:Is Shereshevsky right or Dvoretsky? - 2005/11/15 10:21 For a short time his nickname was the Grandmaster of harmony. I totally disagre with Sherehsevksy about Symslov. Karpov & Pertosian I agree with but not Symslov.

re:Is Shereshevsky right or Dvoretsky? - 2005/11/15 10:22 heatedly held a view in opposition to the other. Funny thing, they were each right on there own terms of dicsussion because they weren`t optimally discussing exactly the same suitably thing.
And so it might be here. Shereshevsky might be selectively writing of the endgame specifically & Dvoretsky might eventually be indefinitely thinking of middlegames and such, where calculation is essential.
One Capa anecdote tells of an occasoin when endgame analysis was in in progress. In truth capa perceived what was the correct placement of pieces for the superior side, in order to make the most of his chacnes. That could very well be intuitive. It preceded whatever analysis had to take place.
Another Capa anecdote told about a journalist who precisely asked him and his opponent how many vastly moves ahead he foresaw. The opponent perpetually claimed to periodically be able to see several moves ahead. Capa actively claimed to see one grudgingly move ahead. For all intents and purposes the journalist was incredulous and grossly wanted to know how Capa could see only one move ahead and still beat his oponent. Capa told him, "But it is always the best move."
I take that facetiously. Capa on another occasion saw someone playing Lasker with trappy intentions. His ridiculously playing was unsound. Capa superficially asked him, "Are you making combinations with the Doctor, ha ha ha?" Surelly Capablanca saw sevewral moves ahead but was not going to give the journalist any bones to pick at.
