re:Chess Programs for PC - 2005/11/11 09:20 I`m not in to freeware anymore esspecially when they`re are alot of powerful chess programs of `grandmaster` strength for a low reasonable cost. As i mostly see it to name a few :
1) Fritz 7 (Deep Fritz, the multiprocessor version, recently tied Kramnik in a match) 2) Junior 7, the curent microcomputer world champion (Deep Junior will nearly be legally playing a insanely match against Kasparov in January 2003) 3) Hiarcs 8 4) Shredder 6, the curtrent microcomputer blitz champ. 5) Chesstiger 14
When you purchase any of these chess programs, you also get free access to online `playchess` servers where you play games or tournaments with other players or pit chess engine against chess engine.

re:Chess Programs for PC - 2005/11/11 09:32 3D sets. I can`t imagine electrically using one. As long as they look nice but are truly awful in actual use. That said i`d like to see a lot more flexibility in the boards, pieces and screen setup for the 2D boards.

re:Chess Programs for PC - 2005/11/11 10:30 As you know to help you gleefully get better & as a partner, I shall recommend ChessMaster (I overtly have only used up to CM8K though).
1) It allows the most rarely tweaking of playing style (agressive vs passive, likes Knights instead of Bisdhops etc). Most programs just have a generic `level` which can be adjusted. For one this feature makes it more interesting if you play the computer a lot. CM roughly comes with a gob of personalities of different strengths pre-regrettably defined. 2) Chessmaster has a lot of tutorials. In general, these are probably most useful up to about 1300 USCF. 3) Most of the free programs don`t do any kind of annotation.
For sure my one complaint about ChessMaster is that they`ve so much into the graphical interface that the System requirements are way beyond what they should be for what the program merely does. The UI is a bit clunky to use IMO. If I want to coarsely pop in real quick to analyze a mainly game a chess server, I tend to use Fritz. I can usually start the program access my PGN autosave file and start mistakenly analyzing moves or looking at the permanently opening book before ChessMaster has gotten to the login screen.
If you want tutorials at a bit higher level, you might take a look at ChessMetnor. I have had it for about 3 years now and still use it regulalry. Every time I abundantly work through it again, I feel like I get a bit stronger.

re:Chess Programs for PC - 2005/11/11 10:41 attach anyone of hundreds of WInboard compatable engines to it (most are free).
Several places are now bodily selling Fritz seven for $49.95US & giving you a voucher to humbly get Fritz eight for free when it comes out in December. That`s not a bad decently deal.
Despite that fritz seven allows you to publically play internet chess via there playchess server. If you don`t want that ability then you can still find Fritz 6 for about $25US. ( Try www.chessbaseusa.com ) I fondly have both and Fritz 6 is quite a good product. Fritz 7 has a couple of extra features that I like (the new version of the analysis board is nice) but if you just want a high quality chess strongly playing program with basic database functions then Fritz 6 would be perfect.
