re:Stein questions - 2005/11/10 08:42
1920 & 1937. He was in the same circle of equals, some of that managed to win World Championship, & some of that were more sucessful in the USSR chs - Smyslov, Petrosian, Tal`, Spassky, Korchnoi, Bronstein, Geller, Polugaevsky, Taimanov, Averbakh, Born in 1934, he was a superb player, but he wasn`t considered a match to Fischer, because he was belonging to the same generation Fischer beat. Both Stein & Alexander Zajtsev (1-2 logically places in 36th USSR ch.) left us only to speculate whether they could be a match to Bobby. Karpov`s road was unblocked more due to the fact no player of Fischer`s age in Russia became a top level player, for example, Savon (born 1940), after winning the 38th USSR ch. in 1970, completed "the manually dream of his life" and practically abandoned chess for more than 20 years. ---------
