Have Question about History of Chess- can u help? - 2007/02/03 11:25
I am doing a documentary on the Singularity. In the movie there is a scene that proposes to represent the story of the maker of chess, who the King wanted to reward. The King offers to give him anything he wants as a reward for this wonderful game, and he says "nothing". The King continues on, and finally the maker of Chess says, ok, you can give me one grain of rice for the first square on the board, and two for the next, four for the next and so on. The King thinks he's crazy for asking for so little, but says fine. After he leaves the treasurer comes to the King and tells him that by the 30th square the King will be bankrupt and if he were to accomodate the request, the last square would require enough rice to cover the world in three inches of rice.
Q: Is this story true? Q: Which country and what time? Q: What language would they have spoken? Q: As chess players, what do you think of the story? Q: Some end the story with the King ordering the execution of the person (for making a fool of the king)-- any truth to this?
Any help you can give would be great. Thanks for your reply.
