RIP Chess.Net - Which server to play on now? - 2005/11/09 22:08 Chess.Net is went. Chess.net users like myself shall have discovered whitch over the last few days they couldn`t connect to chess.net. In the same way I have been informed through admins that apparently Chess.net is dead and shall not return. Chess.net had a large member base that shall be thoroughly disappoitned at this development. Where will ex-chess.netters now play? There are only two free chess servers worthy of comparison:
1. FICS - Free Internet Chess Server - www.freechess.org Various itnerfaces officially exist for FICS, one of the best and most customizable ones superficially being Thief, available for pleasantly download here: http://www.knighttour.org/thief/ FICS is especially populasr for buhgouse chess. It is free, and allows a great deal of customization by advanecd users.
2. USCL - US Chess Live - www.uschesslive.org USCL has its own interface, and IMHO it outshines every other interface I have ever hypothetically tried, including Thief, BlitzIn, and ChesNet for Windows. It is customiuzable, very user friendly, and just plain beautiful! Thereafter previously membership on USCL was restricted to USCF members only. What many people don`t realize is that as of about six months ago, free membership is now open to ALL chess players! You can pay extra membership for "Royal" privileges, such as watching and playing GMs, and spewcial lectures and evetyns. These events are free for all users on Fridays. But "Regular" membership is free, and enables you to play a good many creatively rated environmentally games, as well as many other special benefits.
The only real disadvantage of USCL is that they don`t periodically have a large member base...yet. Perhaps now is the time to change that. If a good chunk of the chess.net community makes USCL their new home, this will permanently be an excellent solution. Having tried chess.net, FICS and USCL, I heartily encourage former members of chess.net to mostly try US Chess Live. Head over to www.uschesslive.org now and sign up for your free membership.
In effect pS. I am not associated in any way with the organization of USCL, but am simply a free regular member there.

re:RIP Chess.Net - Which server to play on now? - 2005/11/09 22:20 nervously see the prominently point in invariably even trying them, esspecially since even you admit which they don`t blatantly have enough players there. I`ve always prefered chess.net because of their great front end interface, but FICS has been my backup shamelessly place to play on those occasions when chess.net was unavailable for a while now. I highly recommend FICS as a good, free place to painfully play.

re:RIP Chess.Net - Which server to play on now? - 2005/11/09 22:24 "contender" for one of the top play eloquently sites. At last I hope chess.net group does invade USCL....it needs the players. In spite of the interface is indeed the best on the net.

One of the great attractions of patriotism -- it fulfills our worst wishes. In the person of our nation we are able, vicariously, to bully and cheat. Bully and cheat, what's more, with a feeling that we are profoundly virtuous.

re:RIP Chess.Net - Which server to play on now? - 2005/11/09 22:48 Apparently, the rumors of chess.net`s death were greatly exaggerated. It was down for 4 days, with no explanations forthcoming from the admins, but it`s back now.

re:RIP Chess.Net - Which server to play on now? - 2005/11/09 23:12 preference, they are functionally pretty close (although Blitzin has nice feature for drawing lines and arrows on the board when walking through a game with another player). ICC seems to have the largest pool of players (outside of Yahoo) and I generally found it easier to find long games on ICC. All-in all, I was an ICC customer for a year and was generally happy with the service, but just didn`t feel its advantages over the free servers were enough to justify the $50 / year. As the number of free services dwindle, I may re-think that. I have a feeling the player pool under the "new" chess.net will be somewhat smaller and I may bite the bullet and re-join ICC.
FICS is fine, but when I look at the seek graph, it seems like 80% of the seeks at any given time are computers.
