The event will star legendary world champion Anatoly Karpov and number one ranked player since 1985, Garry Kasparov, in a two day match. The champions will face each other four times in four 50 minute time-controlled matches.
Anatoly Karpov is a living legend of chess. He has been a dominant figure of the game for the past 25 years and holds the record for winning the most international tournaments ever. Karpov possesses the deepest strategic understanding and most flawless endgame technique ever known.
On December 19th and 20th he will play Garry Kasparov, number one ranked champion for the past 18 years. In 1989 Kasparov became the first and only player to top the 2800 level, a distinction he still holds today. The chess champion is always seeking new challenges; including playing 6 grandmasters simultaneously and defying IBM`s Deep Blue computer in 1996 and 1997.
The two champions first met in 1984, when 21 year old Kasparov challenged then number one champion Karpov. After five months and a series of 17 consecutive draws, the World Chess Federation had to cancel the match, citing the exhaustion of both players. The next year, Kasparov came back to beat Karpov and made history by becoming the youngest World Champion at age 22. Since then, Kasparov has defended his title against Karpov in 1986, 1987, and 1990.
