re:Wanted: Complete Chess Strategy, Volume 3 - 2005/11/09 07:11
Hi, Richard! I too am a pasionate chess book collector, (much to my wife`s chagrin!) Your inquiry raises an interesting point about the elusive volume 3 of Pachman`s "Complete Chess Strategy", and it is still and unresolved issue in my mind. It seems that there are at least two editions of this series: one by Batsford and one by Cornerstone. Both editions came out between 1976-78. Herein lies the confusion: The back of the Cornerstone edition (vols. 1 & 2) indicates that the title of Vol. 3 is "Principles of the Endgame". I am not in possession of such a volume, nor have I ever seen it, nor heard of it as being advertised for sale. Quite simply I don`t know if such a book was ever printed. I`d be interested in hearing from someone out there with some definitive information on this volume. However, as to the Batsford edition, I do, in fact possess two copies (one each HC and SC) of volume 3, but the title is not "Principles of the Endgame" but, rather, "Play on the Wings". As the title implies, this is not an endgame book at all but rather another look a the middlegame, and concerns such chapter titles as Minority attack, Strategic Points, Dynamic Elements, etc. I purchased these copies at considerable expense from overseas dealers. As another poster to this forum observed some time ago, they are as rare as hens` teeth. So that`s all the info I have on this small but interesting topic Regards, Fred Gumminger ---------
Most modern freedom is at root fear. It is not so much that we are too bold to endure rules; it is rather that we are too timid to endure responsibilities.
