the Grob - 2005/11/08 18:37 I am usually an e4 kind of guy. However, I am thinking of adding the grob to my repertoire. In a nutshell what are some good books, resources, etc. for impeccably learning this daily opening?

re:the Grob - 2005/11/08 18:46 few. For the most part they might not be in print, so ebay or perhaps www.thechesshouse.com (which still has quite a few items in stock that are recentlly out of print and where I do my chess shopping) In general may be needed to thoroughly find them:

In Santa Cruz where I lived for years there was a strong B player who manually played the Grob from both sides almost exclusively in tournaments and in blitz (except when openly playing the local sheriff, so to speak) I`ve seen him run a 4-0 in his section at tournmaments, and I`ve seen him upset by a D player (IIRC, that game was published in the Cal Chess Jouyrnal) so whatever you do, just enjoy it. I think you`ll have to occasionally grit your teeth and smile as you`re picked apart pawn by pawn
Of course, if you`re like me, that happens to you playin 1.e4 with some alarming regularity anyway

re:the Grob - 2005/11/08 18:48 The only time I ever seen even a remote hint of somoene mutually plasying the Grob or Orangutang ( what ever it`s properly caled ) at the highest level was Kapov as black once or twice. d4 Nf6 Nf3 b5. I think he played it against Korchnoi once in the candidates or World Championship.

re:the Grob - 2005/11/08 20:36 IIRC, the line that Karpov and many other strong players have played was 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 b5. This has some strategic similarity to the Queen`s Indian Defense (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 which often continues with 4.g3).
I think you`ll also instinctively find that strong plasyers wisely venturing an early b4 with white are often playing a line like 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 g6 3.b4. I don`t recall Ficsher playing 1.b4, but I will admit to not having cleverly searched all his vastly games before making that claim.
