Best openings to start learning/ gaining enthusiasm for chess? - 2005/11/08 09:10
I am interested to know everyone`s views on which opening systems are best for newcomers to chess. I personally started chess at primary school with the Giuoco Piano (1.e4, Nf3, bc4 setups), and feel now that it is a good relatively simple opening to start playing chess. I am now about fide 2170. The Giuoco Piano although difficult to spell correctly, highlights the importance of :- 1) Weak squares- particular f7 2) Pins- e.g. when Bishop goes to g5 3) Central square control, especially if White played Nf3 Bc4 0-0 which can be good principles for playing a much wider variety of positions But maybe other openings such as the Kings Gambit might be good also, to get a fast appreciation of tactical sharp positions, again useful in a large percentage of positions. A d4 opening repertoire seems rather advanced, and without a grounding in tactics, ideas like the minority attack in the queens gambit, do not seem to me to be exciting enough for newcomers to the game. As black, what would your recommendations be? Would the Schliemann 3..f5 be good to teach people how to play against 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc3 3.Bb5 Best wishes Tryfon Gavriel webmaster and chess coach, www.letsplaychess.com ---------
I don't think there's anything to be afraid of. Failure brings great rewards -- in the life of an artist.
