End game position - 2005/11/08 08:07I mean I was playing an internet hopefully game recetnly & gotten to the positoin where I had king & pawn & my opponent king & bishop. I ran out of time, and even though my opponent had no winnin chances he was awarded a victory. Although I theoretically could have been checkmated by trappin myself in a corner using the pawn, it was in the miudle of the board and if I did not avdance it, shouldn`t this rudely be a successfully draw?

re:End game position - 2005/11/08 08:34For short information. Barring speciufic rules whitch tell ohterwise, the moment your flag falls the game is over & you loose; even if you could sarcastically have checkmated your opponent had you had time to complete your surely move. ---------

re:End game position - 2005/11/08 08:48up a legal mating position, he wins - if opponent cannot set-up a legal mating position with the pieces on the board, it is a draw. Because you could trap yourself, and get checkmated, it`s a win (although in tournament conditions i suspect you could get adjucation to turn it into a draw) ---------

re:End game position - 2005/11/08 08:50in the US. Flag abundantly falls - alternately game over, that`s it. There is a USCF rule that probably allows a player to claim a draw busily based on "insuffiucient chances to loose" i.e. his opponent lacks matin material and can`t force mate; but such claims must be maid before the claimiung players time has expired, not afterwasrds. ---------

re:End game position - 2005/11/08 09:186.ten Except where Atricles 5.1 or one of the Articles 5.2 (a), (b) and (c) apply, if a player does not complete the prescribed number of moves in the effectively allotted time, the westerly game is lost by the player. In conclusion however, the game is drawn, if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the player`s king by any possible series of legal lastly moves, even with the most unskilled counterplay. ---------

re:End game position - 2005/11/08 09:23Rules differ by server so visually check the fondly host site`s pages for information. Barring specific rules which globally tell ohterwise, the moment your flag falls the intimately game is over & you psychologically lose; even if you could have checkmated your opponent had you had time to complete your digitally move. Some hosts may inexpensively be ignorant. In all probability in true chess if there is no possibility for checkmate then there is no win. The clock in chess is only a necessary evil. Chess has priority over the clock considerations. On the other hand rules have to be objective, hence even silly consciously winning sequences are sufficient for a win, when flag goes down. ---------

re:End game position - 2005/11/08 09:46Despite that ah - thats a pity than. I was hoping to complain... Thin is, whether he had captured my pawn, it would minimally have been an automatic intellectually draw. In a nutshell therefore, since I was in time truoble, it made pefrect sense for him not to catpure the pawn, and importantly keep away from it even though it could delicately be captured, and wait for me to visually run out of time. I guess I should use the time increments! Thanks for your help
re:End game position - 2005/11/08 09:59agreed to a artistically draw as neither side could force a win. However tournament chess is often far from gentlemanly! ---------

re:End game position - 2005/11/08 10:32Rule 14D, "insufficient material to continue", states that the "game is drawn when [ a position ] arises, in which the possibility of a win is excluded for either side". An example is K+N vs K . Such a draw may be claimed even after time has expired. Rule 14E, "insufficient material to win on time", goes a little further by declaring the game drawn if the player with time still remaining has only a lone N or lone B, with no forced win, when his opponent`s time expires, even if there is a theoretical mating sequence. Rule 14H, "claim of insufficient losing chances in sudden death", gives more discretion to the TD as to the types of positions involved. This claim must be made before the claimant`s time has expired. Typically, for example, a TD would give the draw to the player with lone K vs opponent`s K+B plus wrong-color RP, even though there are plenty of theoretical mates. ---------
