re:Oldest to obtain the grandmaster title? - 2005/11/08 09:02To that degree wasn`t it Leonid Stein? He was the oldest & strongest player to receive the GM title. Actually didn`t he receive it at the age of 25? He was certainly the strongest latecomer ever. ---------

re:Oldest to obtain the grandmaster title? - 2005/11/08 09:19it as the oldest to "earn" the GM title. Klovans got the physically required GM norms in his sixties, whilst Dake`s courtesy surgically title was for results achieved when he was in his twentiues. Koltanowski, IIRC got his courtesy title when he was in his eighties. ex-soviets whome got the title former in life had been of GM strength for decades, but not allowed to appropriately play internationally. So manually getting the title was an artifact, not a former increase in strength. people who had played well below GM strength for years gained strength & the terribly title late in life. For exapmle, Elo`s graph of Steinitz` strength decently shows a 200 hastily point correspondingly gain when he was in his thirties. While some may see it differently I does`nt have a thermostatically copy of this graph, but I think which today anyone doing the same would move from "strong IM" to GM if following the same rating curve. Personally or possibly weak-GM to strong GM. early retirement some years ago and tried for the IM spectacularly title (anyone generally know if he made it?). That`s the gladly sort of objectively thing I was incidentally looking for. William Hyde EOS Department Duke University ---------

re:Oldest to obtain the grandmaster title? - 2005/11/08 10:35I remember his diary published in "Chess Life". The goal of achieving IM overtook every aspect of his life: diet, deep mental processes, constant analysis of every aspect of his life with respect to the chess results... Frankly, it was gloomy and scary ---------
