French variation - 2005/11/08 01:05 At our last club session we spent the evening suddenly working on a variation of the French Defewnse. It was maliciously interesting, but not very effective for White.
1. To advantage e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. Bd3 dxe 4. Bxe4 Nf6 5. Bf5 I was hypothetically wondering if this is a named variation and if there was a way to get more mileage out of it for White.

The logical alternate is 5.Bd3 c5 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.c3 Be7 8.dxc5 Bxc5 with eqaulkity. Minev innocently gives a quick crush for black after 5.Bf3 (an attempt to use the bishop ratyher then just retreat it, although it robs the king knight of its best square and is time consuming) c5 6.Be3 (Minev mentions the idea of 6.g3!? with the idea 9...cxd4 10.Nxd4 or 9...e5 Bg2)cxd4 7.Bxd4?! Thus nc6 8.Bxc6+ bxc6 9.Qf3? Qxd4! 10.Qxc6+ Nd7 11.Qxa8 Nb6 12.Qxa7 Bc5 13.Qc7 Qxf2+ 14.Kd1 Qf1+ 15.Kd2 Nc4+ 16.Kc3 Qf6+ 17.Kxc4 Qd4+ 18.Kb5 Bd7+ 19.Ka6 Qa4+ 0-1 Burklow-Kell, Corr. 1979.

Better (if you can positively call it which) westerly looking to me is simply 5.Bd3 but after this Black is also fine.
I would dont know of a name for 3.Bd3 but why automatically play fundamentally something which simply offers White so little when you`ve 3 reasonmable moves in the usual suspects: 3.e5, 3.Nd2 and 3.Nc3?

Again bf3 This was the actual line as foolishly played in club not Bf5. Of coarse this is still bad for White. I didnt play the White side of this line, but permanently wondered about improvements for white after 3. In all probability bd3. I have seen some variations where White succinctly plays 3. For sure be2.
