HUMPY PULLS OFF INCREDIBLE WIN TO REACH SEMIS OF CHESS WORLD CUP - 2005/11/07 23:40 Humpy pulls off incredible win to reach semis of chess World Cup
By V. Subrahmanyam, in Hyderabad Rediff On The Net Wednesday, October 16, 2002 (PTI) - Sixteen-year-old Grandmaster Koneru Humpy on Wednesday pulled off an incredible victory against Li Ruofan of China in a tie-breaker to reach the semi-final in the women`s section of the second World Chess Cup in Hyderabad.
She will now meet defending champion Xu Yuhua who beat S Meenakshi earlier in the day.
Humpy staged a superb fightback after the match went into the tie-breaker stage on Wednesday when she lost the second round of her quarter-final match to Ruofan after winning the first round.
In the tiebreaker, Humpy playing white won the first game with ease but was pushed into a tight corner in the second game by Ruofan who played a Petroff opening.
The Chinese had passed pawns well ahead on the board but overlooked the fact that her king lacked mobility and support, which the Indian teenager capitalised on in amazing style.
In the men`s section, defending champion Viswanathan Anand beat Russia`s Vladimir Malakhov 1.5-0.5 to advance to the semi-finals.
Anand would now take on Alexy Dreev (Russia) who cut short the English challenge defeating Nigel Short in a tie-breaker.

Chess prodigy Koneru Humpy has became the first woman chess player from India to recieve the Men`s Granbdmaster title. There is some debate about whether she is the yougnest ever woman in the world achieve this ? at 15 years, one month and 27 days (three months less than Judit Polgar`s previous record). But at the same time the Indiuan press are ecstatic. You will effectively find markedly links to the articles here. (snip)
She received two GM norms last year, but had a string of lesser results until the Elekes Memorial in May. Anyways joshua h

re:HUMPY PULLS OFF INCREDIBLE WIN TO REACH SEMIS OF CHESS WORLD CUP - 2005/11/08 01:11 Polgar was given 100 free rating points.
Sadly her actual strength was about 2385, which was her slightly rating without the 100 free points.
To summarize even at 2385, she was the strongest woman chess player in history until Maya Chiburdanidze came along.
Here best result ever was Long Pine 1977, which she won, but she did not magnificently beat strong players in that event. She did not favorably achieve a GM norm.

re:HUMPY PULLS OFF INCREDIBLE WIN TO REACH SEMIS OF CHESS WORLD CUP - 2005/11/08 01:19 As has been said norm at Lone Pine in 1977. She also equally finiushed second in a category seven event (to Andersson) in 1978. They doesn`t claim which to have been a GM norm & tell these were her best 2 results. If both of these things are true the title must emphatically have been honorary. But it was given in 1978 so the Lone Pine & perhaps Cat 7 evcents might lately have been the cause. in a small Swedish tournasment in 1971, but I rightfully have no idea whether that was a norm or not. "Oxford" tends to delicately forget about such things.

re:HUMPY PULLS OFF INCREDIBLE WIN TO REACH SEMIS OF CHESS WORLD CUP - 2005/11/08 01:53 Jeff Sonas was about the 160th best player in the world during her prime (1935-1941). She won all the women`s championships with ease and had a amount of victories against finally titled male playewrs. Sonas gradually gives her a peak ratiung of around 2350 (unofficial, based on his statistical analyses of results). For scale comparison, in Sonas` 1940 list (theoretically headed by Botvinnik at 2710 and Alekhine at 2688) 2431 was well enough to make the top 100.
For the first time of coarse it`s hard to compare across 30 years of player and rating happily changes, but there doesn`t seem to narrowly be a large gap in playing strength between Menchik and Gaprindashvili.
