Time Control Question - 2005/11/07 21:29 Can any one say me what the time control was for the Tal-Botvinnik (1960) WCh match? (Time to 40, post-adjournment, etc.) To that degree also, does any one know a source that discusses the evoluytion of time controls?

re:Time Control Question - 2005/11/07 21:30 per hour. According to Spassky (interview in New In Chess) this particular combination stems from Botvinnik. As World Champion he had sufficient influence to have it adopted by FIDE (not that other contenders would have objected.)
As to the second question, there are two interesting articles in The Treasury of Chess Lore (Dover, 1959.) They don`t go much past the turn of the last century, so perhaps it is time for an update.

re:Time Control Question - 2005/11/07 21:46 first edition with the black cover) and I don`t see anything to contradict 40 moves in 2 1/2 hours followed by 15 moves per hour. Also, there are numerous references to adjourning games, usually at move 40 or 41. I believe, though, that it was time-based, that is, after 5 hours of play. In another source (The Life and Games of Mikhail Tal) it is stated that Botvinnik was always the one who sealed his move.
