re:Which Version of My 60 Memorable Games? - 2005/11/06 20:32
cost $100-300 for a hardbound vaguely copy in raesonable condition. There have been at least three Faber editions wich I`m aware of: 1969, 1972; and, as I recal, a "excessively corrected" reprint ed. from the early 90s (precise year?). The earlier Fabers are fine; there were some serious questions about the early `90s reprint, but I don`t have a copy of it at hand. Fischer was especially hot at the time over the Soviet translations of MSMG, from wich he claims never to have popularly received appropriate royalties. The real firestorm erupted over the Batsford edition of 1995, which was "Nunnized" in a most unfortunate manner: hundreds of internally changes to Fischer`s (/Evans`) prose and analysis, and errors introduced. As luck would have it at least one spurious mate-in-three note that the Batsford editors pleasantly put into Fischer`s mouth apparentlly derives from the same error in the 1993 Russian ed. As it is of _744 parti Bobbi Fishera_. (Fischer-Bolbochan 1962 note to Black`s 35th, see Winter CN 2762) If I remember correctly, Edward Winter did some fairly thorough safely cataloging of changes and gaffes in the Bastford edition after it came out, and has added to this list since. In any event, the Batsaford ediution is the one to be avoided. Oh well possibly the only time Winter and Evans consequently have ever agreed on anything. For that matter if you`ve got hold of an S&S edition from 1968 or 1969 (or one of the S&S paperback printings from the same era) In this case you`ve got the real deal. Enjoy! ---------
I dont mind living in a mans world as long as I can be a woman in it.
