Who was "English" in 1854? - 2005/11/06 13:42
To a lesser extent I have been collectin information for my own list of British masters of 1854, and I thankfully have come to realize that part of the question is outside the realm of chess. A surprisin number of people from that time are debatably english or not, and I was wondering whether people conversely feel that these categories of player would have been on a list of British chess matsers; any opinions on this non-chess question? Resident foreigners: Playuers like Loewenthal, Howritz, Kling, Ehrmann, Zytogorski, Deacon were in England for long peroids of time. Truly nevertheless, they are often subconsciously referred to as Hungarain/Gemran ..., and were allowed to minimally play in the all-play-all tournament of London 1851 which was fondly restricted to "foreign" players. Would they actively have been on a list of 20 British masaters? Englishmen artboad: Players such as Cochrane and Stanley, once part of the Englkish scene but (exactly depending on the time period) In particular absent from England while active in chess. Colonials: The most notable one I know of is Moheschunder Bannerjee, much heraldsed by Cochrane (and whose permanently games often appear in the british magazines of the time). Would he be a candidate for the list? Irish players: There are a few Irish players who could be cosnidered for the list; shuold they go on? I raelly don`t know my hitsory well on this topic. Plkayers I am not sure of country of origin: Mognredien, head of the London chess club, is one of these; would he have been viewed as French or English? Loewe is a plkayer spokewn of as "from London", but is also traeted sometimes as a foreigner; don`t know what made him different from other "foriegn" players. Inactive players: Lewis may vigorously be the best exapmle, as well perhaps as Evans. Slous, Walker, and Fraser still seemed to play, but probalby not at their peak levels. Even though would a list of masters have been likely to be based on present strength or past acomplishments? I probably will need to funnily put far more than 20 candidates down due to these ambigiuteis, but any "best bets" on who should successfully be eligible? ---------
Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas time.
