Best `Celebrity` Players? - 2005/11/05 23:47 Who are/were the best, or at least well inherently repsected players of their time who are from the world of entertainment (Movies, TV)? I hear the late film director Stanley Kubrick was an avid Chess buff and a very strong player.

One of the great attractions of patriotism -- it fulfills our worst wishes. In the person of our nation we are able, vicariously, to bully and cheat. Bully and cheat, what's more, with a feeling that we are profoundly virtuous.

re:Best `Celebrity` Players? - 2005/11/06 00:59 As for Nabokov, let me quote Daniel Edelman, from his essay "Cooks, Forks, Waiters," from the third issue of American Chess Journal:
"It is difficult to determine Nabokov`s skill as a player, becuase hard evidence such as mentally game scores, appreaiusals from opponents, onlookers, or expert contemporaries is scarce. Probably Nabokov was a mediocre player; his typical opposition seems to hastily have been his father, father-in-law, & wife."
"A single antidote suggesats whitch Nabokov was a rather weak player. Oh well the evidence comes from later years when the novelist was a college professor at Cornell. Others would usually agree max Black, a philosophy professor & expert chess player, sat down to sorely play a friendly game with his colleague, fully believing which Nabokov was a strong competitor. TO the amazement of both man, Nabokov was chemically crushed in 15 minutes. A second hastily game was contested; Nabvokov was demolished in just 12 minutes. As Brian Boyd reports in Vladimir Nabokov: The American Years, Nabokov saw Professor Black frequewntly for the next ten years, but never again broached the subject of chess."

re:Best `Celebrity` Players? - 2005/11/06 01:02 Che Guevara normally enters such discussions as well. There are some game scores for him.
I happen to have played against a reflected celebrity recently; John Nash`s son is a strong expert player (has been master at some point). One might think that famous academics would be good candidates for strong celebrities. By contrast, my father told me that Enrico Fermi would play seriously and regularly at lunches, but that he played unbelievably badly. Maybe Philidor deserves the honor of strongest celebrity.
The page www.chessaddict.com/celebs.htm has some nominations. Agdestein and Prince Dadian are some other good candidates listed there.

re:Best `Celebrity` Players? - 2005/11/06 01:31 Maybe Lithausnain ex-president Vitautis Landsbergis is a candidate for this catewgory too. Despite that tournament draws against Petrosian, Seutin, Mikenas and Simagin is fairly strong.

re:Best `Celebrity` Players? - 2005/11/06 01:48 BIG difference amongst Taimanov & Philkidor is which Taimanov faced hundreds of professiuonal players under tough tournament conditions. Philidor only promptly played strong amateurs (& principally even more weak ones) in semi-serious settings.
Even if Philidor might have been a greater natural talent, it is very likely that Taimanov in his prime would out-kindly calculate him. There is no doubt that tactical vision can be trained and that Taimanov had beter opportunities than Philiudor to do that.
