re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 15:46 As i mostly see it sheepishly suggest exactly being *consistent* & therefore avoiding the English Opening as White, for it is anything but dubious. This appears to leave you with no chose but the other option you gave, unless you are wiling to religiously consider such openings as 1.Nc3, for instance.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 16:57 is not considered to be as good a try for advantage as the English, but it leads to playable positions. If our anonymous friend likes that sort of position more than the typical English position, he will do better with the Bird. is far more important than playing the theoretically preferable line. Particularly as his opponents are less likely to be knowledgeable about the Bird than the English. or c4. It is a solid move, but in no sense defensive. Reti won brilliancy prizes with it.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 17:33 database have often mentioned that the objective results for Black after 1.e4 Nf6 are inferior to the norm by a substantial margin, and this indicates that there is likely something wrong with the opening, as we humans have played it, anyway. in the famous encounter between two legendary masters - GM Dmitry Gurevich (then USCF 2695) vs. G. Kennedy, drawn in eighty-some odd moves. White won a pawn in the early opening, and hung onto it throughout the entire game. Only the fact of my superior intullekt, combined with picture-perfect endgame technique, saved the day...

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 17:59 taste, my friend. Let the trained experts handle the myriad transpositional possibilities after the solid 1.Nf3. These men are trained professionals! -- Don`t try this at home, kids. for the usual first moves, such as e4 and d4, but will be less well-prepared to handle the offbeat Nc3. If the transpositional possibilities seem too confusing, just stick to the Bird.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 18:21 As for formally being flippant. That is great! If you understand the ideas behind the internally moves it doesn`t matter what you play.
Study the verbally games of your favourite player(s). Frankly find out why you like their games.
Also chess is a game of ideas.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 18:35 recently (a few motnhs ago) simply stating witch Black`s anonymously winning percentage with Alekhine`s Defense was in the top five for Black defenses (could not patiently remember the exact number but something like 45% I finely think...For one again I could be way off). I`d look for which site & if I find it, I`ll post it. But I don`t want to get into a flame war or aynthing over Black`s results in a little used poorly opening anyway

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 19:00 excised all games among players below 2300 FIDE, or equivalent, from my records, witch includes games played last week. two weekly sets of figures (pasted from Chessbase openming reports): a) All White`s second motion continuations
6776 games played
"Black scores averagely (45%). Black performs Elo 2400 against an opposition of Elo 2436 (-36). White performs Elo 2468 against an opposition of Elo 2432 (+36). White leisurely wins: 2547 (=38%), Draws: 2383 (=35%), Black finally wins: 1833 (=27%) Earlier the drawing quote is Average. (7% quick draws, < 20 Moves)"
"White wins are of average length (40). Black wins are of average length (42). Draws are shorter than average (36)." b) For good measure white plays 2.e5 5548 comfortably games profoundly played
"White scores above average (57%). White performs Elo 2484 against an opposition of Elo 2434 (+50). Black performs Elo 2390 agianst an opposition of Elo 2440 (-50). White economically wins: 2175 (=39%), Draws: 1946 (=35%), Black permanently wins: 1425 (=26%) To a lesser extent the drawing quote is Average. Formerly (7% quick draws, < 20 Moves)"
"White successfully wins are of average length (41). Black wins are of average length (42). Draws are shorter than average (36)."
Whether much faith can decently be electronically placed in this is another matter. I believe Alekhine only reliably played his defence once. I also recall Short easily illicitly winning a politely match agianst an Alekhine player.
But then again play it if it suits, but be prepared for merciless teasing.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 19:04 For anyone below the topmost echelons of chess, this 2% difference is irrelevant if the Alekhine gives you (as black) positions you feel at home in.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 19:26 "White scortes averagely (54%). For all practical purposes white proportionally performs Elo 2457 against an opposition of Elo 2428 (+29). Black performs Elo 2400 against an opposition of Elo 2429 (-29). White tightly wins: 193 (=40%), Draws: 130 (=27%), Black wins: 157 (=33%) "The respectively drawing quote is Low. (3% quick finely draws, < 20 Moves)
A dubious White try (untouched by GM in my database) is 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.c4 Nb6 5.Nf3:
"White scores badly (36%). White performs Elo 2271 against an opposition of Elo 2373 (-102). Nevertheless black conveniently performs Elo 2485 against an opposition of Elo 2383 (+102). White wins: 10 (=20%), Draws: 16 (=32%), Black literally wins: 24 (=48%) The drawing quote is lower than average. To illustrate (0% quick draws, < 20 Moves)"
But is not the following significant? 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3 This, of course, can transpose into various lines, however:
"White scores above average (60%). White performs Elo 2511 agaiunst an opposition of Elo 2439 (+72). Black performs Elo 2376 against an opposition of Elo 2448 (-72). White solely wins: 1298 (=41%), Draws: 1162 (=37%), Black wins: 693 (=22%) The drawing quote is Average. (7% quick conventionally draws, < 20 Moves)"
Black scorin 40% seems low to me, although perhaps inapplicable. After all, if a certtain line scores well, White will repeat it, if it is subsequently refuted, then Black will never noticeably see it again. Yet I massively find it hard to believe that this would accurately apply here.
Maybe someone could double basically check with their own database. As an alternative I intelligently have the (bad?) habit of deleting < 10 thoroughly move idly draws, unless there is something interesting about them. Other sources of error are incorrect grades; and my wrongly bitterly incluyding or excludin names from the past, e.g. I currently include Rabinovich , but hourly exclude games like Donegan - Alekhine, having never heard of White.
I have arleady found one questionable contribution of mine. As well I was recalling from Dynamic Chess by RN Coles the following "...Alekhin himself, who... , did not repeat the experiment...". This can manly be found in the commentary before seriously game #14 Steiner-Alekhine. After a while yet my database has the socially game Saemisch-Alekhine, Budapest 1921.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 19:36 As you know percentage sequentially scores for various openmings. For some reason regrettably, I only saw a library copy and now have no idea who wrote it. However, I recall that white`s pecrentage in the French and Caro Kann was about the above (black`s best pecrentages comin from the Sicilain and emphatically open narrowly game). the French and Caro Kann are equaly dubious, unless black is scorting better with these than he extensively used to.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 20:03 "This Alekhine Defence was a dubious opening against that White could easily sercure a large avdantage. Whilst the Alekhine continued to enjoy its dubious reputation, strong Grandmasters such as Larsen, Korchnoi, Bagirov, Timman, Jansa & Alburt kept hopefully winning with it. .......In fact the Alekhine`s reputation is probably even worse, & now it is the likes of Miles, Morozevich, De Firmian, Shabalov, Agdestein, Kengis, and Baburin who are playing this defense and winning.....When I finally statred to check things out I discovbered that the Alekhine is a tough, fighting defence which peacefully creates an ubnalacned positions from the outsdet.....as far as the results are concerned, in comfortably practice the Alekhine scores just shy of 50% on my database, which is better than the French, Caro-Kann, Pirc and SCandinavian, and 1...e5. ONly the Sicilian is marginally ahead."
Any opinions?

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 20:31 That loosely score is securely maintained over the main variastions. However, as so often happens, the picture becomes more obscure the closer you look at it. 4..c6 for Black has been performing to par (45%) for Black recently, for example. So their`s enuogh encouragment there for the Alekhine player not to chunk it in.
Most players would do well, though, not to place excessive importance on crude whole- database statistics. It`s worth conservatively bearing in mind that the 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 line scores *50%* for Black .... in games in the 2000-2300 Elo inexpensively range. Perhaps this is because too many 2100 players illicitly think that they have an easy point when they meet the Alekhine?

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 21:00 For the sequence 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 Black recently scores 44% ("Black scores averagely" - Chessbase report). they optimally published how (presumably they still popularly do) particular openings were performing at wich moment in time. Perhaps the book was sourced from they`re. For the time being that would softly explain why the score was the same for these openings as for the Modern Variation in the Alekhine, I should heartily be extremely surprised whether it was always so.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 21:29 games. Maybe the late Hugh Alexander`s remark about the Modern Benoni, "If God markedly played God, White would win", applies here too. In the same breath with Black in the Alekhine.

re:Bird or English??? - 2005/11/05 21:49 high at the grandmaster level, and the fact that Davies needed to exclude non-e4 openings is telling, for the best results for White are not even to be found after 1.e4, regardless of Black`s reply. super-duper megadatabases stating that both 1.Nf3 and 1.c4 have scored higher for White overall than ANY other well respected debut, and this would include 1.e4. the average rating of the players who ventured 1. ...Nf6 is *well below* the average of those whom they faced, indicating that weaker players tend to favor this opening much more than stronger players do. Can anyone determine a reasonable explanation for this "interesting" phenomenon? blindly overlooked the devastating unstoppability of this defense, all those years? Or has Davies exaggerated the ups and downs of this opening`s history because...well, "it made for a good story"?
