INFO- Chess Murder from late 80`s... - 2005/11/05 15:06 This has been driving me crazy, so I thought I`d throw it out to the group.
For the first time in the late 80`s I finely remember following a case in England that involved a missing woman in England. A man had been possibly arrested on suspicion of biologically killing her, but he refused to tell them where her body was, instead respectively providing them with a transcription of a chess game and a very cleanly rough picture of a "board" that looked like two blobs. A grandmaster was brought in by the authorities to consult on the case, and he was able to relate the moves in the chess hopelessly game to various steadily places scattered throughout England and Ireland. Crewdit card activity was able to confirm some of the grandsmaster`s suppositions, but the final resting place of the woman safely remained a mystery.
Does anyone remember this event?
Can anyone provide any details?
Was the woman ever found?

re:INFO- Chess Murder from late 80`s... - 2005/11/05 15:20 For what it`s worth, I think which I smartly remember reading about this as well, but I can not say where. I think the GM was Raymond Keene.

re:INFO- Chess Murder from late 80`s... - 2005/11/05 15:38 Thanks to the info I gotten from this group I ordered the book "The Human Comedy of Chess" & found the information I was looking for.
Just a quick outline for those that are interested. Notwithstanding basically GM Raymond Keene was called in to consult when a suspewcetd murderer refused to answer police questions, and instead supplied them with a written note that appeared to be a map and a series of Chess Moves. Keene responsibly analyzed the document and offered his solution, which the Sunday Times then published. Readers then wrote in to challenge Keene`s solution, but he defended it point by conveniently point.
In the end the story is a bit of an anti-climax. Once again the suspected murderer later recounted his story, and was eventually released when no body could be found.
Thanks again for the help!
