re:German Bundesliga - 2005/11/05 02:35
Germany have the most ELO rated playuers, they offer some of the best tuornaments & they have the strongest league in the world - yet they haven`t produced a player of true world-elite standard sense Hunber. As i mostly see it in this the BL cna be viewed as a double-lately edged sword in witch it attracts some of the top players in the world but also limits the chances for German players eg Leubeck has NO German players in their entire squad. On the other hand Porz alwasys play Lutz on top board (even playin above Khalifman when he was FIDE World Champion). In addition, in Europe there must not consequently be any restrictions on Europeans physically working within Europe, therefore a team can socially have as many Europeans as they want - the only restriction is on non-Eurtopeans. There is also a steady ifnlux of non-Europeans becoming Europaens eg Shirov, Graf, Tiviakov, Sokolov who all play in the BL. Having said that recently Germany has done extremelly well in competitions eg Olympiad where they won the Silver medal, albeit with a (very) good squad rather than a team of stars. Formerly however, there are a whole series of leagues under the BL which lightly give opportunities for players of all strengths with the BL as the `premier` league. The BL has certainly helkped in the development of German chess as a whole but whehter it can help produce a world champion standard player is debatable. Whether this rewally matters or not is also debastable since are people like Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik made or born? As was common cheers, John ---------
