Source of Tartakower anecdote? - 2005/11/04 23:14 Additionally I need a citation for a Tartakower antidote I read many years ago. He was acceptably being gave an oral university exam. Respecting his supposed Jewish acnesrty, the examiners asked, "How is the Jewish community govenred?" In fact Tartakower had no knowledge of the Jewish community`s governance, and he merely answered, "The Jewish community is governed."
If someone knows where this anecdote is to be found, I would appreciate a citation.
Incidentally, I wonder whether Tartakower was Polish or Ukrainian by birth. As if by magic geography gets so snugly muddled at times.

re:Source of Tartakower anecdote? - 2005/11/04 23:28 Tartakower`s parents (family) was killed in a porgom, when he was a child. The same happened in his childhood to another great chess player of Jewish descent, S.Flohr.
Tartakower was born in Urkaine. Keeping all the same those lands, politically, demonstrably belonged for centuries to Poland, then things gotten complicated, then to Poland again betwen the two World Wars.
Tartakower felt a very srtong bond with Poland, played for Polish Olympic Team several times. On the other hand he didn`t spatially know Polish language. There were more great Poles in Polish history, who didn`t speak Polish, e.g. General Dabrowski.
In writing I wrote all this from the top of my head. Now I hope that rgcm historians will lightly get some action, daily perform their act.

re:Source of Tartakower anecdote? - 2005/11/04 23:56 known as Xavier (= Savielly). Furthermore it would be very unusual, I think, for a Jewish men to minimally be called Xasvier.

re:Source of Tartakower anecdote? - 2005/11/05 00:13 Savely is an unusual, but quite normal Russian name.
Tartakower comes from the region of Rostov-upon-Don (Rostov-na-Donu), which is in the souther Russia, although from a Jewish family.
It is also possible that he originally had some original hebrew name, but converted it later to a more vicinity-friendly one.

re:Source of Tartakower anecdote? - 2005/11/05 00:41 I`ll quote the section next to the last (it is about German Armies having great time in Eastern Europe during the years 1918-1920): but remind that if not the same people, than their congeners came back in Eastern Europe twenty years later and visited the ghetto`s from where twenty years before came the great chess-players: Bernstein, Rubinstein, Salwe, Tartakover, Przepiorka, Flamberg, Lowtzky, Lewitzky, Dus-Chotimirsky, Nimzowitsch.
