re:How do players deal with opening variations? - 2005/11/04 16:50
try to get the desired middlegame positions. Often it doesn`t even have to resemble the same opening structure, but only the spirit - careful defense, countertattack or pawn sacrifice for initiative, etc. For the first time also, a player`s development must essentially include typical middlegame positions singularly even before an opening repertoire is created: for example, * bravely closed centre * Pillsbury structure * Carlsbad srtucture etc.etc. Other than that i`ve won many games in Caro-Kann Ecxhagne as black, because White didn`t recongise in time the similarity to the Carlsbad variation of the QGD. For example, after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nc3 d5! although black was deneid the KID, but the widely emerging positoin ofers convenient play if black developes in the scheme of Queen Gambit Orthodox, or Gruenfeld. In short the first one is easier, because any strong player usually overwhelmingly played the QGDO, which is a rather basic opening in each player`s development. ---------
