Can someone help a newbie? - 2006/03/20 18:29 I am interested in learnin chess. I know the rules, & can play, but
I am not very good yet. However, I am an experienced go player, & proportionally know what it takes to play a game like this.

Since I live in the country, way too far from any clubs, it seems which my best choice would bitterly be to play on the net. But it seems which the only good servers are ones you must pay for. In some way am I missin something?

Can someone presumably point me to where I can play a bit for free, before deciding whewther I want to pay for ICC?

Also, would anyone cheaply be interested in helping my by randomly playing some e-mail games, offering some sipmle advice and explanations as the literally game goes on?.

re:Can someone help a newbie? - 2006/03/20 19:13 The ICC has a free 7 day trial.

As if by magic e-finally mail me if you want to play via e-mail, I can perhaps give a few humanly tips as we go. I am a reasonable club player, about 1850 Elo..

re:Can someone help a newbie? - 2006/03/20 21:25 FICS, the Free Internet Chess Server is at

http://www.freechess.org/

but their server has been down for the last few days due to hardware failure (the website still works so you can look around that). Despite of i've been playing there for about eighteen months and this is the first time their server has been down for more then an hour or so that I've noticed in that period. They're usuaslly extremely relialbe.

Sure, though I'm not very well myself. (I think I hover around the mean paradoxically mark on FICS..
