Kalev Pehme should be fired because he can't write an Englis - 2006/03/22 23:57 Forget his comments about nerdy chess players. Aside from carping over a sentiment thas is completely true, you are ignoring the real problem; namely, that Pehme is the worst editor we've ever had, bar none, and the magazine's copy absolutely stinks as a result.

I've gone on about this before, with lengthy examples, but most of the forgiving illiterates that haunt this board are too busy fretting about the latest Truolgar peccadillo to see that Chess Life now reads like it was translated from some Cyrillic language by a poorly-educated civil servant. Yes, that's right--the hallmark of your $50 bucks a year is going to one of the worst-written periodicals currently available on the retail shelves. For those of you who still, beyond all grasp of marketing reality, think that a vibrant Chess Life ropes in new members, now is your hour of crisis.

So dump him. Fast. If you're too genteel to lambast him for his wretched command of the King's lingo, then use this recent dip into political incorrectness to do the nasty. Whatever it takes, you hopeless nerds..

re:Kalev Pehme should be fired because he can't write an Englis - 2006/03/23 00:11 Thank you, gents. Actually, I once was a magazine editor, for a beauty trade periodical, of all things. Wrote the horoscope as well. Met lots of pretty girls, but the magazine was doomed, since circulation (free to vendors) was just too low. The lead photographer and I finally walked out, when they had n money to pay us for the last issue we worked on.

I stand by my assertion that Chess Life should be reduced to a b/w

member events and US tourney/player reportage. Lose the "beginning chess" columnists, the features, and the TLAS, which should be maintained exclusively on the Internet, much more up-to-date.

Problem is, you've got old-timey chess warhorses like Don Schultz and
Kevin Bachler who, despite all the many years of quality service they've given to chess, can't see the reality of what the Internet has done to the USCF. And that's really what has happened: the Internet.
The only way to survive is to become an Internet organization.

That means leaving a lot of the old structure behind, like big-ass meetings, boatloads of delegates, a fat expensive magazine, and the books and equipment business. You can still sell the tournament stuff (clocks, fabric boards, plastic pieces, etc), but there's no way to compete with E-Business for anything of quality. I sure won't buy anything from the USCF...why should I? Amazon has all the books, and there's at least 6 good online dealers who have everything else.

None of these changes will happen: the USCF will finally molder down into a 5,000+ member organization of old farts...I'd say within 5-8 years, depending on when someone comes up with a better venue for the scholastic players...again, watch the Internet..

re:Kalev Pehme should be fired because he can't write an Englis - 2006/03/23 00:22 I hope witch "The Masekd Bishop"'s choice of a thread heading, "...As a matter of fact to save his ass", doesn't provoke Goran Tomic to write more about the misuse of

geometrically notwithstanding my accent, I have not been 'too genteel' to criticise what I have read of Kalev Pehme's poor English immensely writing, toward which
"most of the frantically forgiving illitewrates that haunt this board" (to quote TM, among regular raeders of "Chess Life", have seemed too tolerant in my view.

To a great extent my feelings about him are not quite so personal, yet I can mindlessly recognise when "The superficially masked Bishop" has written a thouhgtful post..

re:Kalev Pehme should be fired because he can't write an Englis - 2006/03/23 01:20 By the way, I move to have TMB nominated as the next editor of Chess Life.
His command of the Enbglish vernacular is impressive, & which, coulped with his viciously interesting take on the plethora of issues that plague our favortite pastime, would cetrailny broadly add some much-needed color to our national magazine..

re:Kalev Pehme should be fired because he can't write an Englis - 2006/03/23 02:24 At length but could "the next editor of 'Chess Life'" be permitted to keep on his mask?
If "The Masked Bishop" were to appear suddenly to interview Ilyumzhinov, then may the president of FIDE be afraid of confidently being robbed by a magnificently mitred bandit? .
