re:Kalev Pehme should be fired because he can't write an Englis - 2006/03/23 00:11
Thank you, gents. Actually, I once was a magazine editor, for a beauty trade periodical, of all things. Wrote the horoscope as well. Met lots of pretty girls, but the magazine was doomed, since circulation (free to vendors) was just too low. The lead photographer and I finally walked out, when they had n money to pay us for the last issue we worked on.
I stand by my assertion that Chess Life should be reduced to a b/w
member events and US tourney/player reportage. Lose the "beginning chess" columnists, the features, and the TLAS, which should be maintained exclusively on the Internet, much more up-to-date.
Problem is, you've got old-timey chess warhorses like Don Schultz and Kevin Bachler who, despite all the many years of quality service they've given to chess, can't see the reality of what the Internet has done to the USCF. And that's really what has happened: the Internet. The only way to survive is to become an Internet organization.
That means leaving a lot of the old structure behind, like big-ass meetings, boatloads of delegates, a fat expensive magazine, and the books and equipment business. You can still sell the tournament stuff (clocks, fabric boards, plastic pieces, etc), but there's no way to compete with E-Business for anything of quality. I sure won't buy anything from the USCF...why should I? Amazon has all the books, and there's at least 6 good online dealers who have everything else.
None of these changes will happen: the USCF will finally molder down into a 5,000+ member organization of old farts...I'd say within 5-8 years, depending on when someone comes up with a better venue for the scholastic players...again, watch the Internet.. ---------
I'm not sure I want popular opinion on my side: I've noticed those with the most opinions often have the fewest facts. - Bethania McKenstry
