Re:Whine about this... - 2005/11/04 14:17
Believe me when I say, there are more than a few Americans who wish the Fischer fascination would end as well. I`m tired of flipping through `Chess Life` to Larry Evans` column and inevitably seeing a reader question regarding Fischer. These questions only serve as a launch pad for Evans and his reminiscences of days long past, and of a hero who`s cape has long since been torn asunder. Whomever the person Fischer might have been, has long since been lost to the paranoia that is so evident in his recent ramblings. Sure the guy pulled off an amazing coup, but that was a lifetime ago, and the events of his life `since` are the real reason, IMHO, for the fascination with him - not the level of his play. Had he decided to remain in competition, I`m certain that the Soviets (possibly Karpov, and surely Kasparov) would have regained the crown and Fischer would be just another title-holder who`s best days are behind him. LET GO PEOPLE! This is not the guy to deify.... ---------
You are young, my son, and, as the years go by, time will change and even reverse many of your present opinions. Refrain therefore awhile from setting yourself up as a judge of the highest matters.
