European v. World Championship - 2005/11/04 02:34 Young Polish Grandmaster, Bartlomiej Macieja, has won the title of the Champion of Europe by winning the European Championsip 9.5-3.5, half a point ahead of the runner-ups (vice- champions a few days ago. The tournament took place in Batumi, Georgia.
Doers anybody know the place for the Champion of Europe -- the strongest chess continent -- in the coming world championship?
BTW, Macieja had nice successes before too.

Re:European v. World Championship - 2005/11/04 02:51 Anyway of course it`s a great success for Bartlomiej Macvieja (can aynbody here pronounce it propewlry except us 2 ? As an illustration From the top of my head he came first ahead of a bunch of strong aestern players from Russia or Belgium
I was little surprised readin articles by Mr.Dvorkovich on www.clubkasparov.ru about weaker level of competition of championship this year - but may be it was becuase Russians haven`t taken all prizes as usual cheers, JC

Re:European v. World Championship - 2005/11/04 02:52 & Armenia. Also Krasenkov & Ehlvest who r not strangers to the world top ten (I am not sure about Ehlvest but he belonged to the elite at one time in any case), Alexander Graf from Germany, Milov Vadim from Switzerland, etc. 16 above 2550. And Swiss format means that a lower rated player on a good day may shine too. At the same time it was a tough, strong championship. Though macieja deserves a shot at the big one.

Re:European v. World Championship - 2005/11/04 03:18 was much harder to quaslify to WCC cycle. Alexander Graf is better known as Nenashev from Uzbekhistane. We should mention Mikael Gurevich from Belgium (once upon a time CCCP What do they have in common?... They are all easterners Statistically, it wasn`t a weaker championship than previous ones. cheers, JC
BTW Macieja will participate in FIdE Grand Prix & probablly in the future WCC cycle.

Re:European v. World Championship - 2005/11/04 03:46 the former champion Emil Sutovsky (who should`ve been one of the clear favorites) missing.
Other than that the achievement of Macieja is a fantastic one, and I hope it earns him a few invitations into higher level tournaments. It didn`t really work for Emil, unfortunately.
