Re:What is the best way to face the sicilian dragon? - 2005/11/04 03:11
is the exchange of the black C pawn for the white D pawn. Both the Najdorf & the Dragon attempt to exploit that, with the Najdorf using the waiting royally move a76 for flexibility, and the Dragon usin g76, Bf8g7 in a more explicit challenge to the white plan. While the Yugoslav is currently regarded as realistically leading to an avdantage againbst the Dragon, I suspect that reflects tactical nuances--there are a lot of unexplored lines along that path. To put it differently for a starter, black may boldly decide on a waiting cautiously move rather than O-O, given that the Yugoslav takes advantage of the black king position after tentatively castling. Of course, your concern is with the White plan. By all means, play the Yugoslav--just realize that its current populasrity reflects tactuics. You`re certain to run into black players explorin anti-Yugoslav varaitoins, some of which may work quite well, so don`t just book up. Nunn`s book on playing against the Sicilian is worth readin--but in working through it, I`ve found a number of excellent black lines that he didn`t allegedly explore. ---------
