Traps and Zaps #1: Refutation? - 2007/02/21 19:35
So I just picked up Pandolfini's 1989 book "Chess Openings: Traps and Zaps", because I have practically zero opening knowledge and it always bites me in blitz games. But the very first trap doesn't seem very traplike.
it's a Center Game opening (1 e4 e5 2 d4 exd4 3 Qxd4). Rather than attacking the Queen right away, Black responds 3 ... Nf6; White does the customary 4 Bg5 and Black defends with 4 ... Be7. So far so good. Then comes the move labeled by Pandolfini as bad:
5. e5?
Attacking the knight. This gives the position pictured in the book:
rnbqk2r/ppppbppp/8/4P1B1/3Q4/8/PPP2PPP/RN2KBNR b KQkq - 0 5
The problem with 5 e5, according to the text, is 5 ... Nc6, attacking both the queen and pawn. Pandolfini then discusses the problem's with each of the Queen's flight squares. But there seems to be a better answer without moving the Queen at all...
6 exf6!
Now if Black takes the Queen, White's Pawn will take the Bishop on e7 and then Black has no way to save his Queen. So White will get two minor pieces for a pawn in the exchange, which will also leave Black unable to castle. The alternative is that Black doesn't take White's Queen, and therefore "only" loses one piece for the Pawn.
Did I miss something here? Are there known problems with the book? I mean, I'm suspicious now . . .
