pgn files - 2007/02/28 08:24 Hello, all. Been away from chess for quite some time now. It seems that games are now often offered in pgn format. Is there a nice freeware/shareware program that I can use to (1) replay pgn-formatted games and (2) do analysis, play games, whatever. If not, what do people here recommend?

Thanks for any ideas.

pgn files - 2007/03/01 01:11 Yes there is. When you go to the FICS.com page, you're given several options of interfaces to down load. I use Babschess interface. I also use that interface to look at PGN game files. Babschess also is loaded with crafty. You can use it to run analysis. If you have chessmaster on you computer it will do the same thing for you. I had Chessmaster 8000 on my old machine. It would tell you in plan language where you had errored. This new computer I have won't run that software anymore. I guess I will have to spring for the latest Chessmaster.
I hope this helps.

Re:pgn files - 2007/03/01 19:20 If you still need more (like searching for patterns and opening reports) you may have a look at ChessDB - a free Chess Database program.

More information (and the download) can be found on the website of this software project: http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/

Re:pgn files - 2007/03/01 22:48 Great, thanks ChessTeacher. That looks very interesting, as does "The Week In Chess," which I found via the ChessDB site. I am definitely open to any suggestions for useful/interesting tools & websites. Things have changed since I last played.
