help : how to make a new forum ?

chess rules - 2007/03/06 01:15 Hi, i am new to the forum. great place. I was just curious to whether tournament rule, can a player pick up their piece and move to point a and look around for 3-5 sec and let go of their piece or do they have to think all in their head and then make a move?

The reason i ask is because i'm little annoyed when a player does that =)

chess rules - 2007/03/06 05:26 There's nothing that I know of in any official rules that covers that situation. If your opponent is being distracting you can probably have the TD say something to him, but... Anyway, you can check out either Wikipedia's page on "Rules of Chess" or the official FIDE rules online, particularly Article 4.3., at http://www.fide.com/official/handbook.asp?level=EE101

It would be a different situation if he or she were trying to touch his or her pieces and then not move them, or trying to change the destination of an already-moved piece. That's totally against the rules.

chess rules - 2007/03/06 06:11 Hi thanks for the response. i read the "the act of moving the pieces" but it doesn't say anything about how long you have to let go of the piece once you place the piece on the chessboard.

chess rules - 2007/03/06 20:40 You mean the time it takes for a player to let go of the pawn? Personally he can take all the time necessary. What's the rush?

Re:chess rules - 2007/03/07 16:15 The player is probably not sure about his move and in general should not have touched the piece at all. I think that it is better to learn to think with your head instead of with your hands.
But it is not illegal.

Try to think about it in a different way. Your opponent is telling you his intended move, some time before actually doing the move. Now you can start preparing and thinking about the implications and all if this in your opponent's time.

Re:chess rules - 2007/03/10 23:41 Hello spires97,
In most tournaments you are required to record the moves. I have seen it advised that you should write down your proposed move and then look at the board again before actually touching a piece. This gives you the option to change your mind before you actually touch a piece and are forced to make a legal move with it.

I agree that the practice of taking a piece and placing it on the destination square while leaving your hand on the piece is distracting. First because the persons hand partially blocks your view of the board and also because you are unsure if you are going to have to correct the person if they think they don't have to move that piece.

Re:chess rules - 2007/03/13 21:03 One note regarding the suggestion of rtaylor777.

According to the FIDE Handbook it is forbidden to write the moves in advance.

Re:chess rules - 2007/03/13 23:10 "To write" - but this is about thinking and taking 'too long' - no? Isn't this where this question is about?

Re:chess rules - 2007/03/14 12:40 The rule is added rather recently (in july 2005).

The idea in itself was very good. A lot of chess teachers recommend this practice as a method for reducing the tendency to blunder in haste.
And the FIDE rules do not always apply. On some tournaments the players are even permitted to write their move, think some more, erase it and write a different move.
