Chess Trainer - 2007/03/22 16:57 Is anyone here available to train other people in Chess? I'm trying to get better at it, and i've got a few books on it and some good defenses, like the Sicilian Defense, Nimzoindian Defense, Four-move Checkmate, and all those great opening defensive/offensive strategies, but when it gets to someone foiling the defense, i'm lost, and from that point on, my middle game is ruined. Also, i see something on these strategies and stuff, but no one explains them well, they just give me an example game...how is this supposed to help me be able to know WHEN to use this defense, and how to keep it strong? Or for that matter, if some of the moves made in the examples were not just a move made because black moved a certain piece or not? Is there a set standard for these, or what? I'm lost....

Re:Chess Trainer - 2007/03/22 19:07 Hi CD27,
The best solution is to find a chess mentor in your area. You could see if you can find a chess club. I found this
http://www.timesenterprise.com/entertainment/cnhinsentertainment_story_078104539.html? keyword=topstory

I don't know if this guy or club is near you or not. I don't have any such resource close by so I use a program called Chess Mentor http://www.chessmentor.com. I bought the deluxe version and it has been well worth the investment for me.

We can give you general advice and comment on your games if you post the moves here but there is nothing like having a real interactive mentor for rapid real time improvement.

Specifically in regards to your questions... chess is a struggle between two contestants. Chess is dynamic and there are so many possibilities that learning specific move sequences past a certain point into the game is not practical.

The opening theory provides specific move sequences which have evolved over many years of practice and reflects what is presently believed to be the strongest moves for both sides. The moves by each side are partly determined by the pawn structure which defines where the pieces can best be placed (developed) and partly by the moves of the opponent.

Study of tactics which are possible in different positions (such as the 4 move checkmate and others) is important to build your strength defensively and offensively. Ultimately being able to do well in the middle game requires you to analyze prospective moves and threats for you and your opponent and to be able to meet (counter or neutralize) any threat your opponent has on this move or the next. This requires real work during the game and your strength will grow with practice and study of tactics and strategy.

I hope this helps,
Take Care

Re:Chess Trainer - 2007/03/22 20:19 I think that rtaylor777 already has given a rather complete answer.

To be able to help you further in this forum you have to be a little bit more specific.

I assume that you are familiar with the tactic building blocks of the combinations (pin, skewer, fork, discovered attack, ...), but I may be wrong.
I think that learning opening sequences doesn't really help. It is more important to know why the other moves are bad.

Re:Chess Trainer - 2007/03/23 19:40 I imagine that downloads would be blocked from attachments in your email as well.

Here is the link to the demo download.
http://www.chessmentor.com/files/ChessMentor_Demo.zip

If the situation is that you only have Internet access at school perhaps a teacher or someone in computer support would be willing to get it for you as they are normally not as limited by security measures.

Re:Chess Trainer - 2007/03/28 04:09 My advice to anyone learning the game, is just to enjoy playing the game. That is the main thing. Enjoy the challenge of out thinking your opponent.

I have never been a lover of the early stages of the game. I much prefere the middle and end games, where the game is a little more complex.
I have never read a chess book in my life, but I do enjoy playing the game.

I hope this advice may be of some use.

Re:Chess Trainer - 2007/04/02 00:04 Hi Dame

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I obviously prefere the real life games, rather than over the net.
Unfortunately I don't play as much as I like.
Over the last year, I have only managed maybe 12 games in real life and maybe 6 online games.

Hopefully I can find some good opposition to test myself with?
The site I play the occasional game of chess upon...... usually has very few chess players.
Where can I play a game online?
Can I play from here?
If so.....then how?

OK, you can go here to play chess online.

Good luck

Re:Chess Trainer - 2007/04/08 14:47 Hi Dame
I have started a game via e-mail.....but what I really wanted was a game in real time. One I could start and finish in an hour or 2. Do you have this facility?
If not.....then can you reccomend somewhere where I can play this type of game?

Re:Chess Trainer - 2007/04/08 21:33 That would only be realizable if a 'meeting' was set for all players to be online at the same time, I think - by using the link I provided above.
If this is not what you meant, maybe roam around this forum some more because this kind of information is usually placed here in one or more topics.

Good luck
