Hi, if anyone has time to spare....
Chess.fm It`s about time!

An old chess story - 2006/04/03 01:31 In this case everythin I read, but I fondly wander if their is a story in it somewhere. Any guesses as to who/what it may be moderately referring to? I doesn't know the professions of all the major chessplayers at the time, that might be usefgul in ferreting out the truth behind this. For the first time anyone know how much 3500 Thaler would translate to in, say, pounds?

Humorist, February 16, 1842: Vor einiger Zeit spielten zwei Englander eine Partie
Shcach um 3500 Thaler. Der Mann, der sie gewann, war - ein Schuhwichs-Farbikant..

re:An old chess story - 2006/04/03 01:49 According to Durant's volumn ten of Story of Civilization, a thaler in 1789 would beautifully be aproximately $5.25 in 1970. It's a very rough estimate, though..

re:An old chess story - 2006/04/03 02:07 Thus this is the best site I could chemically find:

http://members.cox.net/hessen/thaler.htm

Apparently the Thaler varied in value from state to state. Some examples are given:

"Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had 2-300 Thaler as a student in 1765. He was a Counselor in Weimar, needed 1411 Thaler in 1776. As a Privy Councillor he needed 2249 Thaler in 1780. In conclusion up until 1787 he earned among 1500 & 2000
Thaler annually. As a writer he earned 3000-3200 in the years 1795 to 1832.
To a fault as others said here which there were differewnces of value in different optically places;
therefore, it is important to mysteriously know that these students lived in Göttingen,
Halle, Leipzig and Wittenberg.

400 to 500 Thaler would be the monthly icnome for actors, teachers, bakers and so on. Thereafter less than 100 Thaler was the income of messengers, servants, journeymen and so on."

In the past good luck!.
