Too aggressive? - 2007/04/22 13:28 This was my first competitive game for 10 years and I threw a strong position away - just like the old days ! I need to learn how to WIN a chess game.

Apart from a terrible move where I sacrifice the exchange instead of winning a bishop on move 27. I would be interested to read some comments about where I went wrong (in principle). I already used chessmaster 9000 to analyse the moves tactically. I am just wondering whether I should have paid a bit more attention to other things e.g. blacks backward d-pawn,maybe thrown my other kingside pawns into the fray or just calmed down a bit.

Anybody kind enough to comment? I'd really appreciate some feedback.

This guy was rated 80 (BCF)= 1240 ELO so I reckon I should have won.

Cheers,

Re:Too aggressive? - 2007/04/22 16:59 A possible improvement is to play 20.e5 instead of 20.g5. After 20...dxe5 you can play 21.Rxe5. The e-line is the most important line in this game.

A real mistake was move 27.Rxe7. The game continuation 27.gxf6 Bxf6 28.Bxf6 looks very nice for White.

Another point of improvement. Instead of 39.Qf5+ it is better in my opinion to play 39.Kh3. You will probably be able to play Qf5+ on the next move. I think that this move is the reason that you have lost the game. The previous annotations are more related to the reason why you didn't win the game.
The moves 42.f4 and 44.f5+ made it somewhat easier for your opponent to win the game.

Re:Too aggressive? - 2007/04/23 18:17 i have kind of the same problem. i play okay, but i'm not anywhere's near as good as i want to be. i would suggest reading some material. alot of people i've talked to have suggested against this, but i think it's great for some people who just really need someone to explain to them in exhausted (spl?) format what is the best move to make. since it's so difficult to really get a one-on-one teacher in real time, i would suggest reading material on opening, middle-game, and end-game strategies. if you have a good understanding and strong foundation in strategies, then it will help you to understand what exactly the best move would be to make. you don't have to stick to a strategy, in fact, the key is simply to use a strategy to your advantage so that you notice some moves and already have a quick and effective comeback with it.

I've been reading alot on the opening strategies, because that's what calls the game to play. after that, the strategy is basically your own. the opening game ends when one player castles, after that, it's in the middle-game and it's basically no longer your strategy playing, rather YOU playing on that strategy.

Some strategies include Alekhine's Defense, Silician Defense, and much more, but remember, a strategy is simply for you to base off of. when you base off this strategy, you can either help yourself or ruin yourself. this is key because sometimes your opponent also knows alot about these strategies and also how to defend against them. the downside to using a strategy is that if your opponent finds some way how to completely foil it, and you can't think of another one, then you're on your own from there, no strategy will help you. after that it is just you, your good moves, and your ability to understand what your opponent's best move is and how you can make your best move to both foil his/her best move and to give you the advantage at the same time.

i would suggest some material from Fred Reinfeld, especially a book entitled "The Complete Chess Guide".

good luck!
