pinned mate - 2007/05/14 16:28 My son asked a question about mating with a piece that is pinned, and I wasn't sure about the answer. The question is, can a piece that moves to intercede a check create a mate, even though that piece becomes pinned? I thought that a mate is a mate, but wanted to make sure that my answer was correct.

The attached jpg shows what I'm talking about. In it, the white bishop can block the black rook's check, and in doing so creates what looks to be a mate. The question is, is this still a mate, even though the bishop is pinned?

Thanks in advance.

pinned mate - 2007/05/14 17:08 Ed, it is a valid checkmate.
A checkmate is a position where the opponent king cannot escape being captured in the next following move. So it does not matter what black is to play next, his king will be captured 'first'.
