searching for moves - 2007/05/23 16:53 Hallo,

is there a database, preferably online and/or free, where one can actually search for moves, not just positions?

I'm interested in the question "What move was played in a given position?" But Chesslive & the like only answer "How often has a position occured?" which would be fine, if transpositions didn't exist.

For example, after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bc4 there is the quiet 4..Bc5 transposing to the Giuco Piano, and there is the grab for advantage 4..Nxe4. Which move is played how often?

Thanks for hints,
Rossi.

Re:searching for moves - 2007/05/23 17:56 This online database can be found at http://www.chesslive.de/.

After entering the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bc4 you can see that the quiet move 4..Bc5 is played more often than Nxe4.

But this seems to depend on the database. In another database I'll see that Nxe4 is played in about 39% and Bc5 in about 32% of the games.

Both moves are the most important moves in that position and I consider them equally important, but based on the scores I assume that 4...Bc5 is better.

Re:searching for moves - 2007/05/23 23:14 Hallo Chess Teacher,

sorry, but I think you are wrong. What you see at Chesslive is the number of times a position occured. It shows not the count for the move itself, but for the position after that move.

It's the same number (N=109) for

the move Bc5 after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bc4

and

the move Nf6 after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Nc3

You can do it with other transpositions - same result.

Or am I looking at the wrong numbers?

What's the other database you refer to? The numbers sound more plausible.

Re:searching for moves - 2007/05/25 20:02 I think you are right.

You can download a free chess database program ChessDB at http://chessdb.sourceforge.net/ and can use the TWIC games to build a database or you can download the games from ICofy at http://www.icofy.com/

(To have a look at an example window with the frequencies, you can look at http://scid.sourceforge.net/screenshots/tree.png )

Re:searching for moves - 2007/05/26 20:52 Thanks a lot. That's exactly what I was looking for. Now I'll start my own big database.
