2.f4 against the Caro-Kann - 2007/08/24 14:17 Caro Kann is my main defense against 1.e4 but I have a lot of trouble when faced with 2.f4. Any ideas on how to continue play? What strategies to adopt?

I usually just do 2...d5, and play normal C-K moves e.g. Nd7, e6 etc. and end up being subject to an attack wherever my king goes

2.f4 against the Caro-Kann - 2007/08/24 20:03 You can try something like
1.e4 c6 2.f4 d5 3.e5 Bf5 4.Nf3 e6 5.d4 c5
or
1.e4 c6 2.f4 d5 3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Nf2 g6
depending on White's third move
I shouldn't play Nd7

Maybe you can post one of your games here

2.f4 against the Caro-Kann - 2007/08/25 15:27 I hadn't thought of using a fianchetto formation against it, I shall give it a go.
Thanks

2.f4 against the Caro-Kann - 2007/08/25 19:07 yea chess teacher has a valid point, a finchetto would allow you to get your early castling whilst applying pressure on center squares.

A good combative counter

2.f4 against the Caro-Kann - 2007/08/26 04:24 I have had some good games on the White side of the following: 1 e4 c6 2 f4 d5 3 e5 Bf5 4 g4!?. This line may be an improvement over the more common 1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 e5 Bf5 4 g4 Be4 5 Nf3, because in "my" line the move Nf3 doesn't block the f-pawn.

2.f4 against the Caro-Kann - 2007/11/01 23:35 1 e4 c6 2 f4 .... i wish i didn't have to look at a chess board for this. Ok try to use my mental board umm
D5. this would come back to me over the board. Your Idea is to trade off your problem child bishop and to secure the Knight on F5 with h5. If i am seeing things correctly. As Always things will depend on what your opponents move is. Chuckle

Hope this helps you
Don't forget to strike at the center when it's time with c5
