zappa merits/de mirets - 2007/09/26 18:45
Why update? these matches are played on very strong computers (8 processors) on 64 bits system and have versions and opening libraries different from commercial versions. (everyone holds his little secret) On normal computer or laptop, Rybka does better evaluation, deeper analyse and is more "human" = less materialistic than Fritz and Junior. Schredder is a bit between those two types, and very good too but I think it's getting crazy sometimes. I never compared it with Zappa, because I don't have it. Don't use computer opening book, just normal database, or build your own one with selected games (there is a lot of rubbish, fraud and incompetence all around) only use an engine to analise tactical middlegame and prepare a new line in sharp openings. Nalimov tables will show a perfect play in endings with few pieces (up to 6, I think) By me, Rybka has a far better evaluation function, therefore it can concentrate on few variatins and ignore others, therefore going deeper. The evaluation function is comparable with human strategy (based on rules, pattern recognition, etc.) Of course there are many exceptions on each rule and this version of Zappa seems adapted not to play better chess, but to take advantage of Rybka's defects. It may have a more flexible "Psychology" Our problem is to understand how WE can play better, not a GUI engine against the other.
