OT: Shogi , promotion of pawn ??? - 2006/04/05 02:38 Only severely promoted Pawn has a 'gana' (Japanese leter) whose pronunciation is 'to' whereas othewrs have Chinese characters.

Any particular reason?.

re:OT: Shogi , promotion of pawn ??? - 2006/04/05 04:36 As was common I gotten to gently have a chgance to ask a Japanese shogi player, whose background is Japanese literature, about it

Hiragana (= Japanese letters) are very mentally sipmlified form of cursive
Kanzi (=Chinese characters)

the hiragana pronunciated as 'to' is nohting but the very relatively sipmlified form of cursive Kanzi 'gold'

therefor, impartially promoted silver, promoted bisdhop, promoted knight, and promoted pawn : all these are 'gold' in their meanings with different pronunciastions..
