Is this unethical? - 2007/09/29 16:59 I started playing chess four years ago. I played in my local league and also in some local congresses and my last published grade, publishes about a year ago, is 112ecf (This is the english grade, roughly 1500 elo). About a year ago I stopped playing over the board chess and just played on the internet and studied out of books. In that time I have improved vastly and have beaten an IM in a blitz game and drawn with several others, although I admit I usually do lose when I play them. I estimate my strength now at 160ecf(1880elo)based both on what my 200ecf(2200elo) strength friend says and from playing casual games against other strong players.

My question is: would it be wrong for me to enter low graded sections in over the board congresses knowing I could crush them all and win the top prize? I am thinking of entering a u115 section at an upcoming tournament and the top prize is £500. My official grade is 112ecf so I would not be breaking any rules. My 200ecf friend says I should go for it since my grade will increase massively when the next grading is done and then I will be stuck palying in Open sections being crushed repeatedly by players of his strength or better.

What do you think? I have 5 tournaments in mind over the next few months and I could make £1500 by winning them all.

I this unethical? - 2007/09/29 23:25 It's not unethical to try. You probably won't do as well as you think you'll do, so don't feel guilty in advance. Plus if you do well you'll tire of the charade quickly. Either way it's not a big deal.

I think I would do very well. I remember when I was about 100ecf srength - in about 75% of games I played at some point one player would leave a piece en prise to a two or even one move combination, mates in 1 still happened, most players have not a plan and play many meaningless moves most of the time. My play is entirely different to that now. When I play my boyfriend who has grade 200ecf and plays in national league in UK (4NCL) I win about one out of five, he wins three out of five and the other is drawn. We usually play about one hour a side games. I play casually at his club too and players of 100ecf strength seem very bad to me now and I am sure I would win 90%+ of long games against them.

I just don't know if its fair to take prize money of £500 in a section when I should be playing two sections above.

Go for it. After all it still is game with unpredictable endings - so you might be in for a surprise.

Re:I this unethical? - 2007/10/06 15:33 If the rules are not broken as you said, then it's okay; those who made those rules might have known about your predicament. On the other side of the coin: if your conscience tells you that it's wrong, then it's probably unethical. I hope I made sense.
