When you get your GM title, I'll start considering the possibility that you might someday be the best player ever.
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2007/10/06 15:10I guess there are no right or wrong answers here In my opinion, Bobby Fischer is the best; he's the odd man out in Russian (USSR) dominated chess. At present, I think Anand is the best; he's a chess machine!
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2007/10/07 08:521. Garry Kasparov 2. Bobby Fischer 3. Jose R. Capablanca 4. Anatoly Karpov 5. Alexander Alekhine
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2007/10/07 11:07This debate rages in all activities. Chucky's nominations were all fine players. I would nominate as further candidates Botvinnick, Em Lasker, and Morphy. Had Morphy lived in this age, he would have given all the others a run for their money. This presumes he would have taken on board the knowledge of present day players.

Sorry, I forgot Romeo!

Post edited by: mistermac, at: 2007/10/07 11:08 Any of the players that you mentioned would definitely have a chance to win any chess tournament that's ever been held.
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2007/10/22 10:43Kasparov and Fischer are hands down favorites for the 'best' title, and I would give a slight edge to Kasparov. Capablanca comes closer to these two than any other. Kramnik by far in modern times has been a complete player [disregarding his illness due to which his results were a bit flawed and his attempt to rejuvenate his repertoire which ended up a disaster so to speak] comes closer to the trio in modern day play. Arguably Topalov and Anand [along with Ivanchuk] are top class but have too many flaws be it lack of nerves..or erratic results or in Anand's case..the perpetual underdog tag which he has never quite disposed off. He is brilliant but he gets into trouble against almost anyone due to his emotional state during games. Botvinnik, Lasker and Karpov were head and shoulders above the rest during their times.
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2007/10/22 13:33Kasparov is/was so far above and beyond all the others there's no contest. That he was beaten by Deep Blue seems to have tarnished him somewhat but we are rating the best players, not computers. (If you haven't seen the video "Game Over" about the Deep Blue match I highly recommend it.)
Fischer was in the top five to be sure. His style, bravado, and "US vs. USSR" appeal added to his legend but not really to his chess. His style had so much to do with intimidation and the psych factor. I'm not sure he would stack up real well against Kasparov or any of the other modern-day players.
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2007/12/22 16:32You left out Paul Morphy...Capablanca...I'll put my faith with these two against any player...I'll hang with these two masters. ---------
Ironwagon
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2008/01/25 02:05For me, its Morphy, Tal, Fisher dashling performances my own point of view (limited resources, of course.
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2008/02/03 20:55For me I must say it´s an underdog but he when he played at his best no one could beat him, due to a psychic "mental" illness hes career became shortened. Akiba Rubinstein I wish I could make one of his brilliant moves one day when I´m dreaming...! Feel free to play some of his games over...! They are to be found in chessbase database as well as in chessmaster series database and in chessbooks as well.
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2008/02/04 09:00Seems To Me All Time Right?
That I saw a thing on the history channel.
About a king of Persia
Salliemae <not sure if that's spelled right<
Who played a mean game of chess. Course that was about a thousand years ago. And he was in the middle of holy war. Trying to negotiate a truce. The whole "Great Peace Giver" thing.
Course you have to wonder if they had the hand shake rule back then.
And Charlemagne , You remember him. The King of Franks guy. From the late 700's. Helped standardise the chess board and pieces.
Heard tell he was pretty good.
He was the FIDE of his day. Made up some of the rules and all.
Maybe he came up with the handshake deal
Who Knows ?
Since as we all know . Some things never change. Those who make the rules are always The best at knowing how to get around them. And enforcing them to there benefit.
What about that feller from China who plays 20 some games at once on a long set of tables?
See here's the thing.
I'm not sure that the players mentioned from barely the last 50 years.
Qualifies as all time
Think 1924 FIDE founded.
Sure a few folks from the PAY ATTENTION 19th century The 1800's could compete and win today the 21st century.
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2008/04/04 23:18IMHO;
1. Kasparov - Absolutely lethal chess player. He could exploit even the slightest weakness in a position. Just look at how long he dominated the game. (Of course he had access to much more advanced chess theory compared to some of the great players of the past, but I still believe he belongs at the top spot).
2. Fischer - Not only did he crush all opposition, but he made it look easy. An innovative and unpredicatable genius, even if he was a little insane
3. Capablanca - Won through raw talent more than theoretical knowledge. At the height of his career he fully deserved his nickname of 'invincible', and if he were around today I'm sure he'd give Anand a run for his money.
4. Morphy - Exciting, aggresive and brilliant. His games may not have been as technically sound as some of the modern grandmasters, but he was the greatest player of his time, and like Capablanca he relied on his incredible intuition at the board.
5. Tal - To this day his games serve as examples of how to formulate stunning attacks. Once he gaimed momentum there was no stopping him.
I'd also give an honourable mention to Karpov. His games aren't very accessable to casual players, but his style of slowly restricting and shutting down his opponent and then forcing his way to a dominant position was very effective, and no-one uses 'waiting moves' to more effect.
What do you all think of Anand compared to the likes of these guys?
Re:Who is the best Chess Player of All time????? - 2008/04/05 20:49When I think of Anand the first thing that comes to mind is his defeat in the world championship by Kasparov. I think he's currently the strongest player but by a small margin. I'm not sure where to rank him.
