What is better, Offence or Defence ???? - 2007/10/05 03:39 So what is? I really am looking for a good answer to that question. For me I like to start of on Defence. I like to adjust to the opponents game and then when he least expects it I take over and eventually win the game.

What is better, Offence or Defence ???? - 2007/10/05 20:00 A lot of chess players have lost a game because they started to attack before they had developed their pieces. But other players have lost the game because they played to passive (especially in the middlegame).

I think that you managed to find a good balance.

What is better, Offence or Defence ???? - 2007/10/06 07:42 I prefer to have the initiative. I have no problem giving up a pawn in the opening in order to seize the initiative. I like to attack and keep my opponent under pressure and hope that he or she cracks under the strain.

What is better, Offence or Defence ???? - 2007/10/06 15:45 Defense rules! This is what sets the masters apart. And we all know the best defense... you're right, offense. Now while you're waiting (assuming the opponent attacks), you look for those loopholes or weak spots. The nice pawn structure of the opponent can be destroyed by a very poor pawn push, usually made in haste. Then you attack. Very similar to boxing--the counterpunch is the knock-out punch! And in chess that is a combination of moves...

Re:What is better, Offence or Defence ???? - 2007/10/18 02:13 First of all it's like asking which is better strategy or tactics - you'll need them both to win.

Different situations call for different strategies. In general though if your advantage will be around the rest of the game it's more prudent to play slow and solid to grind your opponent down. If your advantage will only be around for a few moves obviously you need to act fast. So static advantage (e.g. bad pawns) means slower play while dynamic advantage (e.g. active pieces) means seize the moment.

Even at the elite level it's gone both ways - some world champs have been brilliant attackers, some defenders. Aside from general style though what wins you more games than anything is finding the best moves you can for the given position.
