seeking answer to chess situation - 2007/10/19 15:04 hi
a friend and i were playing chess the other day and got into a situation we were unsure on the rules.

my friend got a pawn to the other side before i had taken off any of his pieces. Does he get to turn the pawn into a piece (ie. queen, rook, knight..) Does the pawn sit there until i have taken off one of his men and then get turned?

Hopefully someone can help me?

Cheers, Lenni

seeking answer to chess situation - 2007/10/19 15:16 You can turn (called promote) that pawn into another queen, rook, bishop or knight! So theoretically you can have 9 queens at the same time! Isn't that something!

Re:seeking answer to chess situation - 2007/10/19 21:16 Charlie92 is right:

And this is one of the reasons that you can see some queens at the side of the board at the start of a game during some tournaments.

Re:seeking answer to chess situation - 2007/10/20 05:53 I'm just wondering: what is the usual practice when you don't have any pieces to use? Is it placing a checker under the pawn to signal that it is a queen, e.g? I remember using a rook and putting a pawn on top...

Re:seeking answer to chess situation - 2007/10/20 11:01 Often an upside-down rook is used to designate a queen, but this may not be allowed in an official tournament and can even lead to disqualification.

For friendly games I should say: use the upside-down rook

Re:seeking answer to chess situation - 2007/10/20 22:30 Many chess sets come with two queens. I have a very nice Staunton plastic set with two queens that is my favorite set of pieces.

In case that's not available, sure turn a rook over, or use a coin. Two queens...nice problem to have!
