interclub competitions - 2007/11/14 09:37 Hey every one, my name is Jacob Reid, and I was wondering any of y'all knew of a chess site that posts or hosts interclub chess tournaments. Our chess club is kind of just regaining footing and is very small compared to most, but I think it would be fun to have some interclub chess tournaments. Our best player is an official expert, John Wu. He's really cool, and hopefully I'll get good enough to beat him in a couple months of hardcore training, but in any case, do you guys know anything about interclub chess tournaments?

interclub competitions - 2007/11/15 18:35 Hmm... I'm not an expert at tournament hosting, but I think it would take about 5 chess engines, so 10 people could play 60 minute games per round. Each team has 5 of their best players from their club and they face the 5 best players of the other club. It would take a little work publicizing, but I imagine there is a site that has a mailing list of chess clubs throughout the world. It also would take a little work organizing the point system. I think the simplest way would be just to have 5 games per round and the team who has the highest points wins that round. I don't know how many rounds you would have, or if you would have rewards for the winners. Maybe, there should be some sort of ante for the clubs to enter the tournament. One, difficulty, of course, which is something that the president of our chess club doesn't trust, is that people will use computer programs to play in an online tournament. And that would happen, especially if it was for money.

You might want to just set up one for fun, and maybe send a certificate to the winners or something. Most people, I think, don't find any value in cheating to win, but it's hard to say. I don't find any value in it, but some people are so obsessed with winning and so shallow, that they might just use the "Deep Blue" to get an upper-hand.

Anyway, I gotta get some papers written; I'll cya.

Jake
