I am White. Does anybody have any tips or ideas that could have saved the game for me? Of course there are tactical shots but what about positional ideas?

Game Analysis - 2007/11/28 15:35 I tried to follow the moves but I guess there are some problems (typos maybe?). 20... Qb3 is not possible; might be 20... Qb8? I guessed it to be 20... Qb8 so I continued. But then 28... e4 is impossible, so perhaps the moves are not right. Did you check the moves? It might be easier if you copied the PGN and maybe use that...
N.B. There is a duplicate posting at www.chesscircle.net/forums/games-analysis/41059-help-with-analysis.html so this reply is also duplicated there.

Game Analysis - 2007/11/28 15:56 Thanks Charlie. I checked it last night. I was afriad of this. I entered the game into Fritz 8.

Yes, 20. is ...Qb8. 28. is ...Qb8 also. I checked the rest of the moves with my scoresheet and they should be correct.

I have the score sheet with me but I don't have access to the Fritz database right now.

Thanks for your input. In the future would it be easier if I put the games in the PGN format?

BB

Game Analysis - 2007/11/28 17:10 It's an interesting game. You used Fritz so I guess the analysis there is great (some say it's the best engine); although I have 'The King' engine, I used Crafty (it's free) here (the battle of the chess programs is another topic). Beforehand, I guess we all fall to carelessness in playing, sometimes finding the best move after we moved. The game is a good teaching material--it contains many tactical concepts, perhaps to your detriment in the end.
4. h3 is tempo-losing; the center is fast developing. 14. Bb5 appears to be a good move but the presence of all those minor pieces very far may make them vulnerable to attack later, not to mention the advanced Black queen and pawn. 24. Nxg7 is a better move; 27. Qc7 is also winning. The effectiveness of 31. Rxf6 is neutered by the advanced black queen. 32. Rf3 is the turning point; good move is 32. Rg4 (Queen can't capture it to advantage). Now it's just a matter of time...
Yes, PGN is better, which also standardizes the notation. The game moves you provided are not standard notation (space is placed, not a hyphen, etc.). I don't know if there's a utility here--I import the tools from www.chessvideos.tv . See you around!

Game Analysis - 2007/11/28 19:52 You were doing very well till 13.Bc7+ Kd7
but the error 14.Bb5 is probably more tactical than positional.
On the other hand you know that you are winning, but that you still have to save the Knight. Maybe it can be saved by 14.Bf4.
Furthermore you have the Rooks so you like the open files: 14.exd4 creates such an open file. In addition it seems to enable moves like 14.Be5, which also enables Nc7.

If you try to improve your positonal play the best advice is to write down why you played each of your moves. You have to have a plan and all plans may be good, as long as you have a plan. The second step is to look how many moves belonged to the same plan. Try to stick to the plan, unless your opponent forces you to decide otherwise.
