The two major artists that I listen to when I play usually come down to Bob Dylan or Rush. Either way, I've always won when I've listened to them, and my midgame is so much more defined when they're playing.
Basically, I'm a prog-rock and folk music sort of guy when I play chess. The Mars Volta, Coheed & Cambria, Yes, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger... You get the picture.
If anybody has not heard Yes' "I've Seen All Good People," I recommend it as a fun song over the metaphor of chess.
