Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2007/12/07 18:44I have earlier bought some chessprograms from chessbase. I have Fritz 6 which I find very fine and useful. But now, with the new operating system from Microsoft, Vista, it is complete impossible to run this program on a computer with Vista, whatever I do in compatility, ( run as Xp, 98, 95 etc) Is there anyone who has expierienced this, and have any solution to the problem??
Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2007/12/07 20:26hilmarje welcome here
Vista is still with many problems in different applications. with chess programs or otherwise. Why don't you wait until those problems are ironed out and go back to the program you used when things ran smoothly?
Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2007/12/10 20:12You are certainlly right. But- in Norway it is impossible to have new laptops without Vista. And I bought my first one just now.
And I dont think the computer- and data- people will fix everything. They have to make new version etc, so they can sell and earn more money. But at least they could make the operating system work out with programs that earlier had run smoothely on previous systen, like XP.
Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2007/12/11 10:38Yes, you are right, hilmarje. But exactly like you said, this world turns around money and if they would do that it would mean that they would have less customers next time around. Some competition usually is very healthy in these kind of things and improve quality and customer service greatly.
Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2008/01/02 04:27Well, just as a test, I installed Fritz 5.32 (the free german version) it installed and ran just fine in Vista. Now, in case it matters, I ran the installation as the Administrator.
I will try 7 and 8 later, as those are the newest ones I have of Fritz. I may even have 6 somewhere, since that was the first fritz I bought. If I bother installing MS Active synch, I may try installing pocket fritz 2.0 also. However as I remember it, the install doesn't really work for my Axim, and I have to manually install that one.
I have a crack somewhere that takes the cd check off of 8 and won't install it until I can find it. I really hate disk-checks. I own the software legally, so I don't feel bad using the crack.
CB Lite 2007 seems to work fine. As does CB 9.0. I just installed, COW (used to be Bookup and it works fine.)
I also have most of the Convekta stuff, (Chess Assistant 9 and TCT I and II)
I have just installed CA 9 and it seems fine. It did want to be run as administrator, but it seems to work fine. I am installing the latest upgrades to that as I type this.
Now if anyone wants to give me Fritz 9 or 10 or whatever version is latest, I will be happy to test it under Vista.
So my question is, what software specifically are you having difficulties with in Vista? So far, other than the problem with IE 7 and opening lots and lots of tabs I have not had any problems in Vista at all.
Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2008/01/02 22:57Hello chessfriend
It seems that you are better off with your chessprograms than I am. I have Fritz 532 also, and have some throuble with this program too. To load a playing -book, the cd must stay in the computer, and I dont know why. ( I am not an expierienced data-man). But Friz 6 will not run. I have chesssbase 6, and it runs ok, but with chessbase 7 there is problems. I would bee very happy if you could find your fritz 6, and even happier if you could tell me what to do.
I have not the newer version of chessbase and Fritz 7 and so on.
Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2008/01/03 02:28Can't you just throw Vista off and install XP (there must be someone who has a copy for you )? ---------

Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2008/01/03 07:26Ok, for Fritz 5.32, I have the free German version that was posted to some magazine site long time ago. I merely go to the directory where it is, and called
532Setup.exe
I right click on it, and choose "Run As Administrator". This will install it with no grief. You then have to install one of th eopening books for it, there are several free ones available.
As for chessbase lite 2007, I right-clicked the install package "CBLightEnglishSetup.exe" and chose 'Run As Administrator' and when it was done, it worked fine.
Chess Assistant 9. Installed the same way. When the CD opens and wants to autorun i say NO. Then browse to the setup in the english folder and do the same thing. However, once it is installed the shortcut will not work. So I go to the exe, and right click it, and choose COMPATIBILITY, then at the bottom where it says Run this program as administrator, i click that checkbox and it is fine!
Same thing with Fritz 8. It just installed (As administrator). Now normally I run a little patcher called 'ChessBase_Generic_Patch.zip' but that would not succesfully update the chessprogram8.exe under Vista. However, since i am actually moving stuff form one machine to another, I merely pulled my already patched copy of the exe across. Instead of messing with it.
I have Fritz 7, but since I already installed 8, I dont' want to go backwards and corrupt the settings, not do I feel like going through the uninstall and such. 6 for some reason I can't find. I have it in a zip but that may suggest that it is not a legal version so I am not messing with that anyway. I was pretty sure that I had 6 but I cna't find the disks anywhere.
Anyway, just try it using "Run As Administrator" when you run the install program. See if that helps.
Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2008/01/09 18:49Hello Chessfriends
It do not work out for me, Fritz 6 will not run.And I dont get the possibility tio install it as admin.
I did send a mail to chessbase, telling that over a period of 3-4 years some 4 years ago, I bought chessprograms from the costing almost 1000 euros. --But they told me, this programs will not run on Vista, so they adviced me to buy the latest prgrams . I feel beeing cheated. If I bought a new Mercedes Benz, I would expect it to run and go after 5-6 yaers.
So one have to be careful where and what programs one buy.
Re:Windows Vista and old chess programs - 2008/01/10 08:41Hilmarje that is outrageous. they should give out patches to update the games in order to work for every operating system.
