Re:rest in peace bobby fischer - 2008/01/19 16:41 It's a pity that things went wrong after the championship. At that time he was certainly the greatest chess player. He didn't trust other people and always was very suspicious, but this was partly caused by the FBI that didn't trust him either after a training visit to the USSR after his first US Championship. Re:rest in peace bobby fischer - 2008/01/23 00:16 Of course Fischer may have been used as a pawn to some extent during the era of cold war politics w/USSR. This dates back to the early 60's, when he did not attend a major tournament in Havana, Cuba, but played via teletype instead. Also, the WC macth vs. Spassky was something the powers that be in the US at the time tried to get some mileage out of as well, since this was still during the cold war era.

Re:rest in peace bobby fischer - 2008/01/23 11:23 Well, in any event, no matter what happened, it is wrong to make the antisemitic statements he made. He might have been a glorious chessmaster but as a person I hold no respect for him.

Re:rest in peace bobby fischer - 2008/01/24 00:37 Dame, I agree. The guy became a bit of a nutcase with time, and of course the fact that during his career there were Jews who were helpful to him didn't seem to matter to him.
I also wanted to note, former US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger got involved in the Fischer Spassky match negotiations at the last moment, just before Fischer was about to walk out on the match, but Kissinger somehow persuaded Bobby to keep playing.
=====================================================
I only liked Kissinger for two things:
1) He persuaded Fischer to stay in the WC Match vs. Spassky in Rekjavik.
2) He persuaded Nixon not to drop nuclear bombs on Hanoi near the end of the war in Vietnam.
Otherwise I have no use for Kissinger.

Re:rest in peace bobby fischer - 2008/01/25 12:46 I sorta thought Kissinger always very charming Like a movie star I have seen a documentary about his life and he wasn't so bad, I think

I know Bobby Fischer made it all on his own and I have acknowledged his impact on chess, but I stick to my opinion that as a human being I don't think he deserves my respect.

Re:rest in peace bobby fischer - 2008/02/01 06:09 Bye Bye Bobby Again {I wrote a forum post on this once before}

The day he died. You can never take away what he did for
the game of chess. It is a game not a political statement. He was a personal hero of mine . Look what he did for chess WORLDWIDE.
That's Cool >>O'k

But he was always so full of himself. The political climate at the time. He took full advantage. Fischer set the stage for so many , grand masters , of today I don't care what country they live in. Arrogance. Plain and simple.

I'll just say it. He used his fame. For his own agenda.
He was a man making a living playing a kids game.
It is a game after all. Whittle it down.

Ask around , your peers , man/woman on the street.
Do you know who Bobby Fischer was / is ?
Unless they play chess and are old enough to care
Chances are they will tell you.

He sells fish sticks.
Yellow rain coat.Right?
But I thought it was Mrs. Fisher.

The more I read about his "legacy" . The more it sticks in my craw. And once you've asked about Bobby.
Ask about Jay-Lo , O.J , or Milochevich. Bet the person on the street gets 2 of 3 right.

In closeing . Chess has had no place in politics
since Ronald Reagan ended the cold war and brought down the Berlin wall.

Re:rest in peace bobby fischer - 2008/02/02 13:21 Yes, Mark - sorry. I'm a woman and I think Kissinger was charming. Like a gentleman kind of style.

shotgun:
In closeing . Chess has had no place in politics

that is true. but you will find that many people having talent for some kind of sport or art will feel things are getting to their heads and think of themselves as if their opinions are more important in other fields than those they became famous for. You can see it definitely in hollywood actors. Susan Sarandon, Barbra Streisand and many,many more think that their opinion about things other than music and movies is important. Well, me for one, don't give a blabla for whatever they think
