There is an array of old, DOS-based chess programs from the late 80s and the early 90s free for download at http://www.gambitchess.com/pub/progr.htm.
The old Chessmaster editions and early Fritz versions are all there for you to download, and more. Do visit http://www.gambitchess.com/pub/progr.htm and I'm pretty sure you'll find some really ancient chess software there.

W-chess, David Kittinger - 2008/02/03 19:21 I really was looking for the pure DOS-version from -94 or -95...it played very fun chess and were very aggresive. I had it on a diskette bought from Novag but in those days you bought and upgraded computers on allmost a dailey basis so my three copies of the program dissapeared quikly. And also I could play W-Chess on my Smartboard from TASC and I would like to be able to do that again.

W-chess, David Kittinger - 2008/02/04 15:53 I am going to buy an old portable laptop computer..with win95 as OS..that makes me able to use the smartboard as well..and..!! On a machine like that the chessplaying software is not as hard to beat.. as the programms of today running on quad-processors and what have you..?
