Pretty kingside pawn structure vs. a minor piece - 2008/05/25 16:21 I'd like some opinions. Here's the scenario:

Let's say you have castled King-side and you are presented with the opportunity to win a minor piece, but at the cost of screwing up your pretty pawn line that protects your King. Is it worth it?

More specifically, you go from having pawns on h7, g7, and f7 to having them on h7, f4, f6. In recompense you get a minor piece.

At the point at which you have to make this decision, you are even in material with your opponent. And... your opponent does not appear to have an imminent attack waiting.

Whaddya think?

Pretty kingside pawn structure vs. a minor piece - 2008/05/25 22:12 well this is a tough one. It does depend on certain things however.

It is common ground to for players to sacrifice pieces in order to open up the pawn line, by doing so you may open files for rooks or diagonals for bishops.

Before taking the piece, look at the files and diagonals that become useable to the opposition and see if you can derive any plans they have to use it.

If it seems too good to be true....it probably is.

Hope this helps

Pretty kingside pawn structure vs. a minor piece - 2008/05/25 22:31 Thanks, that's pretty much my take on it as well. It's hard to turn down a bishop or a knight freely given, when there is no forthcoming attack to be endured. But having a fouled up pawn structure in front of one's king is pretty hard to stomach, so it's not an easy decision to me.

Thanks again. Anyone else have a different perspective on this?

Re:Pretty kingside pawn structure vs. a minor piece - 2008/05/26 17:58 I agree.
In relation to the question the other way around, when to sacrifice a minor piece in order to get an attack, the most famous example is the classical bishop sacrifice. This example even made it to wikipedia as you can see here.
